Working to end the suffering of exploited and confined animals through legislation, education, action and advocacy.

About us

Mission To work towards the end of suffering of exploited and confined animals, through legislation, consumer advocacy, action and humane education. Our History Christine Townend founded Animal Liberation in 1976, based on the philosophies set out by Professor Peter Singer in his best selling book, Animal Liberation. Societies over time have continuously challenged dominant social views for the rights of the oppressed. Discrimination against various races and women were at one point, part of the social norm. Animals now make up this oppressed group, making the fight against their use, abuse, and exploitation one of the biggest social change movements around the world today. These sentient beings are forced to live in disgusting, crammed conditions and subjected to vile treatment throughout their shortened lifespan, and it is time for change. Our Work Animal Liberation fights animal rights issues through: research, investigations, education (campaigns, speakers, Facebook & website), lobbying, public events (meetings, protests, stalls, Cruelty Free Festival), and the 1800 Cruelty Hotline.

🐪 🐫 Animal Liberation's Australian-first exposé shows wild camels captured, roughly handled, psychologically ‘broken’, and forced into servitude by a popular tourism operator in the Northern Territory. Our investigation highlights some of the issues inherent in animal-based tourism and the lack of animal welfare regulation and oversight within the industry. Animal Liberation's successful, extensive and ongoing 'Freedom of Information' applications under the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (GIPA), confirms that the 'unnamed' attending vet at the 2023 NYD Moruya rodeo, 1) did not witness the incident where a steer became so distressed in the chute, it's thrashing about and ramming of its head resulted in one of its horns being caught between the chute's metal bars, tearing one horn almost to the steer's head and 2), was not notified of the steer's serious injury by the Moruya rodeo operators. While the presence of a vet could/should have either prevented this injury, it failed to do so. Similarly, the presence of a vet could/should have ensured immediate vet care for the injured steer to relieve its pain and distress, it failed to do so. The attendance of a vet in either a mandatory or voluntary capacity, 'may' give the appearance of better animal welfare, and adherence to the intent of the law and public expectations, a vet presence will not; - Change the culture or practices at rodeo events which seek to provoke and torment animals to 'perform' causing physical and psychological harm. - Guarantee the attending vet is adequately monitoring all rodeo activities and practices. - Ensure any injured animal receives required vet care including emergency care where an injury has been sustained. - Require the rodeo operator or their contractors to see the vet's intervention and treatment care for an injured animal. - Prevent multiple animals from experiencing physical and psychological harm during the course of any rodeo event. - Avoid any potential conflicts of interest by a vet hired and paid by a rodeo operator to monitor the rodeo event. Animal Liberation strongly maintains that the only way to prevent animal suffering and cruelty at these events, and protect the welfare and wellbeing of animals used in rodeo, bull riding, rooftop express and rodeo school events, is to ban rodeos. 🗳️ With NSW council elections scheduled for Saturday 14 September, this is an important reminder about the role councils play in planning matters and, the welfare and wellbeing of animals 🐾. It's also a reminder of the critical "public interest" role we can all play as the collective grassroots community voice. The state's planning system shapes development proposals, but local councils also play a crucial role. Through planning staff 👷, elected councillors 🏛️, and tools like the Local Environment Plan 🌍, policies and any bias in place with decision makers. Your voice is powerful 💬. Together, we can get animals on the agenda for the NSW council elections and keep them there when new councillors are elected. We have compiled a powerful guide 💻 to help you lead conversations with those running for council. You can read and apply our guide here: https://lnkd.in/gjvcymU9

The highly pathogenic avian influenza (bird flu) has been a growing issue in intensive animal farming for years. This year, a strain spread to dairy cows in several US states. In Australia, the threat to our wildlife is escalating—some NSW vets are already refusing to treat injured or sick birds due to fears of bird flu. 💔 Minister Penny Sharpe warns that H5N1 could soon reach penguin colonies in Manly. In Peru, 40% of pelicans have died, and thousands of sea lions in North America have already perished. Australia is the last continent to remain untouched by this deadly strain, but experts say it's a matter of when, not if. The factory farming of sentient beings in inhumane conditions will always increase the risk of disease outbreaks. Warming temperatures and bird migration are also heightening the risk of a devastating outbreak, threatening to wipe out wild bird populations. We are all connected. By choosing to no longer support industries that confine and exploit animals in agricultural facilities, we can take a stand against this cycle of cruelty and disease.

Today is Threatened Species Day, a stark reminder of the perilous state of Australia's unique wildlife. On this day in 1936, we lost the last remaining Tasmanian tiger on Earth. Now, over 2,000 Australian plants and animals are at risk of extinction, with over 1,000 species listed as threatened in NSW alone. 💔 Our native animals are facing an extinction crisis, driven by relentless habitat destruction, urban sprawl, animal agriculture, logging, climate change, hunting and diseases brought about by stress, and weak planning and environmental protections. Every year, millions of hectares of crucial wildlife habitat are bulldozed for agriculture and housing developments. Even more shocking, NSW continues to issue "licence to harm" permits that allow the killing of protected species deemed "pests". Meanwhile, kangaroos face brutal commercial harvesting, with millions shot each year in what remains the largest land-based slaughter of wildlife in the world. In the last two years alone, 163 species have been added to the Threatened Species List. Iconic animals like the koala and greater glider were recently uplisted from 'Vulnerable' to 'Endangered', highlighting how our weak laws and lack of funding are impacting wildlife and the wild places they call home. But hope isn't lost – it's in our hands. By treasuring our wildlife and pushing for stronger protections, we can paint a brighter future together. This Threatened Species Day, let's renew our commitment to protecting our environment and every creature who calls it home. From the iconic to the overlooked, each species plays a vital role. Together, we can turn the tide of extinction and make every day a day to celebrate, protect, and cherish Australia's extraordinary wildlife.

In today’s NSW Budget Estimates hearing (Racing), news became public about two more GRNSW, GAP NSW and the ‘Aussie Mates in the States’ program, greyhound victims. Alby and Katana both bred to race and discarded died in the custody of the failed and non-transparent GRNSW ‘rescue’ and ‘rehoming scheme. One of these dogs is alleged to have been left on the tarmac for six hours and boiled to death. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gkTWeGzi More to come…

An interesting insight into ethical tourism and how to have an ethical wildlife experience without contributing to harmful practices and animal tourism businesses who cater to human comfort and entertainment over animal welfare, by forcing animals to perform, often involving physical or emotional torture. “It’s an incredible and primordial experience to encounter wildlife, one that is essential to existing in the ecosystem of the world, teaching us about our place in it and inspiring us to take better care of its majestic nature.“ Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gXARBr63

BREAKING: The Notice of Motion to rescind resolution 24/0267, the ‘refusal’ decision for the Blantyre Farms DA for an intensive mega piggery, in the Harden region, made by the majority of Hilltops councillors at the Hilltops Council meeting on 28 August 2024, has been voted down. Tonight, at Hilltops Council’s Extraordinary meeting, we again witnessed good democracy in action, and the right and ethical decision to refuse the Blantyre Farms DA has been upheld. Our nine-year opposition to this harmful planning proposal demonstrates the power of the collective grassroots voice for right, compassion, and evidenced based decision making. The Motion to rescind the previous refusal decision, orchestrated by Councillors Ingram, Hewson, and Mackay was lost, with Councillors Flanery, Stadtmiller and Piper excusing themselves due to non-pecuniary conflicts of interest. Animal Liberation will continue to oppose all harmful planning proposals which risk or impact sentient beings, including our precious native species, our shared environment, and people, as well as proposals that impact public health and worker protections in intensive animal agribusinesses. The right of all sentient beings to live ‘free from harm’ will be upheld by Animal Liberation on the basis of compassion without compromise.
