The ANU Institute for Space creates opportunities for ANU innovations to supercharge Australia’s space capability.
About us
InSpace connects space research at Australian National University with society's biggest challenges to deliver positive impact. We do this by shaping and growing the Australian space ecosystem in partnership with Academia, Industry, Government, and Communities. The Australian National University Institute for Space operates under the Research & Innovation Portfolio as a team of individuals dedicated to the common goal of crossing disciplinary borders and developing new opportunities for collaborations in space research across ANU, the Australian space sector, and globally. Space is more than the traditional image of astronauts exploring our solar system or astronomers looking through telescopes. Space is about innovation, technological advancement, and making life better for people on Earth. It’s about satellites and the valuable data they can collect from space, space health and medicine advances that translate to your local hospital, and rovers and robotics that work off-world and in places on Earth that humans cannot reach. ANU InSpace works with Academia, Industry, Government, and Community partners to catalyse space research. We engage with the global space industry, bringing cross-disciplinary capability together to solve national challenges and enable ANU and Australia to contribute to global initiatives such as climate and water resilience, remote healthcare access, and regional security. InSpace team members are advocates for space innovation. They represent ANU, its space capabilities, and world-leading research expertise as members and leaders of influential groups that are shaping the future of Australia’s space industry.

Last week we featured out Strategic Project Managers and their highlights for 2024. Today we put the spotlight on Kate Ferguson, ANU InSpace Associate Director, Strategic Projects, as she discusses her highlights of 2024 alongside what she's most looking forward to in 2025: In 2024, I was proud to support a large portfolio of ANU-led iLAuNCH Trailblazer projects. From developing the original proposal to scoping and refining projects, engaging with our industry partners, to contract negotiations, we saw nine projects over the line to contract signature, kicking them off to start delivering fantastic capability in the Australian space sector. As the culmination of over two years of effort, it has been extremely gratifying to see the fruits of all this effort! With the iLAuNCH portfolio now firmly into delivery mode, I'm most looking forward to our next big strategic project as we accelerate the development of the Future of Space CRC during 2025. This Cooperative Research Centre will not only build on previous partnerships and capabilities to achieve new heights, but it will also increase engagement with end user sectors to deliver new economic opportunities enabled by space capabilities. iLAuNCH Trailblazer Industry Partners: University of Southern Queensland, University of South Australia, New Frontier Technologies, Space Machines Company, Liquid Instruments, Aspen Medical, Saber Astronautics, Northrop Grumman Australia, Spiral Blue, Inovor Technologies, Axiom Space, Aqacia, Leonardo UK, Nominal Systems, Boswell Technologies, Azista BST Aerospace, Optus Satellite and Space Systems, TeleDynamics Pty Ltd, HEO and ANT61. Congratulations to all involved, here's to exciting times ahead for improving satellite tracking!
The iLAuNCH Trailblazer is collaborating with HEO, ANT61 and The Australian National University on a groundbreaking project to improve satellite tracking! 🛰 Currently, radar and non-resolved optical observations offer limited precision, particularly in distinguishing satellites on similar orbital paths. This project will demonstrate a scalable solution that improves identification accuracy and enhances space situational awareness. This project will introduce an infrared "licence plate" beacon attached to a demonstrator satellite. This beacon will emit near-infrared light, which can be detected by ground-based telescopes across the globe. This initiative underscores Australia’s growing capabilities in space situational awareness and satellite tracking, reinforcing its position as a leader in cutting-edge space technologies. Read more about this project here: https://lnkd.in/gFYjsJZT The iLAuNCH Trailblazer is a collaborative partnership between University of Southern Queensland, The Australian National University and University of South Australia supported by the Australian Government Department of Education.
