On #WorldTsunamiAwarenessDay, a team of international scientists are drilling deep into the fault zone off the coast of Japan (through 7 km of water!) to retrieve samples of rock from the slip zone of the deadly 2011 Japan quake and tsunami. They're examining the details of the geology to better understand how tsunamis are generated. It's a project called #JTRACK, #IODP Expedition 405.
