The 2024 AORA ASM has kicked off this morning as we welcomed trainees to Brisbane for a two-day program of paper presentations, instructional lectures, a symposium, the NTFE, research awards, and a networking function. This year AORA collaborated with the Australian Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS), and presented a foot and ankle symposium today with case discussions designed to tackle all areas of the lower limb in preparation for the National Trial Fellowship Exam on Sunday.

Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) reposted this
Had a fantastic time speaking at the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and Australian Medicolegal College combined meeting at the Hamilton Island Yacht Club this weekend with my colleague Yvette Porter from Physio Plus Group. It was great to discuss the critical role that physiotherapy, exercise physiology, and active rehabilitation play in achieving optimal outcomes for patients. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the insightful conversations! #Physiotherapy #ExercisePhysiology #Rehabilitation #AOA #MedicoLegal #HealthcareOutcomes

“Investing in early, evidence-based care for osteoarthritic conditions is essential to reducing the incidence of orthopaedic surgery in Australia. With over $2 billion spent annually on healthcare costs directly related to osteoarthritis, including knee and hip replacement surgery, there is an urgent need to prioritise funding for preventative measures that can delay or even prevent these surgeries. By doing so, we can improve patient outcomes and reduce the financial strain on our healthcare system." President Michael Johnson has echoed the call of an AOA-led coalition of patient-advocacy groups for increased investment in nonoperative care, which will ease the pressure of osteoarthritic care on the health budget while improving outcomes for Australian patients. AOA joined a meeting last week in Canberra led by Arthritis Australia, where more than 90 consumers and health leaders met with ministers and politicians, focused on the huge burden of musculoskeletal conditions. These conditions affect one in three Australians, and they’re the leading cause of chronic pain and early retirement due to ill health. AOA Vice-President Scott Fletcher strongly supports this urgent advocacy work: “Orthopaedic surgical care provides immense benefit to tens of thousands of Australians every year, but our surgeons recognise the deep value of non-operative management and its crucial role in musculoskeletal care. We must support and amplify the work carried out by our peers at Arthritis Australia and other expert groups in collaboration with patients and our members: evidence-based management of osteoarthritic conditions needs significantly improved support, and soon.” Read more about the meeting, the ongoing advocacy work it connects to, and the impact of insufficient funding on patients through the full communique on the Arthritis Australia website: https://lnkd.in/gjCRTijJ
