About us
The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) is the prudential regulator of the Australian financial services industry. It oversees banks, credit unions, building societies, general and life insurance and reinsurance companies, private health insurance, friendly societies, and most members of the superannuation industry. Our mandate is to protect the Australian Community by establishing and enforcing prudential standards and practices designed to ensure that, under all reasonable circumstances, financial promises made by institutions we supervise are met within a stable, efficient and competitive financial system. APRA is made up of diverse range of highly skilled professionals who are responsible for the prudential supervision of the banks, credit unions, building societies, general insurance and reinsurance companies, life insurance, private health insurance, friendly societies and regulated superannuation funds. Recently, APRA’s Aspire Network was delighted to host a conversation with Julie Inman - Grant, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner with APRA employees and peer agencies. More than 300 people joined the conversation. Julie shared invaluable insights and research on the critical work being done to keep Australians safe online. Julie kindly answered many questions including the impact and sharp increase of technology-facilitated abuse, fraud and exploitation. As the leader of the world’s first government regulatory agency dedicated to online safety, Julie has led the charge to establish safety centric design, preventing harms before they occur and the world-first regulatory regimes under the new Online Safety Act 2021.
