Biofilms grow on all surfaces and environments, from catheters to drinking water pipes and ships. They are complex organisations of cells that grow on both living and inert surfaces and are both viscous and elastic in nature. Our centre aims to transform biofouling management strategies for maritime platforms by building on local and international expertise to mentor and train the next generation of interdisciplinary scientists and engineers. Anticipating evolving regulatory stringency, this project expects to establish a dynamic environment for industry partners, students and scientists to collaborate and develop biofilm management strategies. The Training Centre is managed across three university Nodes (Flinders University, Swinburne University and the University of Tasmania) in close collaboration with our partners: ASC Pty Ltd, BAE Systems Maritime Australia, Defence Science and Technology Group, DMTC Limited, Environmental Protection Authority, Enware Australia Pty Ltd, Franmarine Underwater Services Pty Ltd, Molino, Zhang and Associates Pty Ltd., Osmoflo Pty Ltd, South Australian Water Corporation, Sparc Technologies Ltd, The Ohio State University and University of Toulon.

This was so cool ! I had the opportunity to accompany our Dr Tamar Jamieson for a tour of the USS Emory S. Land which has docked in Adelaide. It was featured in our local newspaper yesterday. It is essentially a floating engineering workshop (based in Guam) which is available to assist submarines anywhere in the world if they have an engineering problem - also things for the submariners like health/dental care etc. It even has its own post office - personal items ordered online take a while to arrive though. I guess it takes Amazon a while to work out where the ship is!! Australian Research Council

@1st Nano & Microplastics Australian Conference – 7-8 March 2024 held at Flinders University Bedford Park The Nano Microplastics Research Consortium brought together researchers, industries, community groups and representatives from government agencies to discuss issues and solutions to micro plastics pollution. Sessions focused on various aspects of the challenges faced by different stakeholders. Research presented included the risks associated with microplastics, where gaps in research are located around Australia, and how to develop a field manual for sample collection. Sophie Leterme (ARC Training Centre For Biofilm Research and Innovation) gave an oral talk ‘Microplastic studies from freshwater to the marine food chain’ in Session 1 of the conference. #microplastics #nanoplastics #NMRC #conference
