Why aren’t there more women being promoted within the Australian Financial Services industry if “when women do request promotions, they are more successful than men in obtaining them”? A study led by Laura Ryan PhD, Head of Research at Ardea IM uncovered that men disproportionately benefit from a promotion process that includes 'gifted advancement'—where employees are promoted without having to request it—resulting in compounded financial advantages over their female counterparts, who are less frequently promoted by this method. Cassandra Crowe, CFA GAICD, CFA, vice president at T. Rowe Price Australia and co-author of the study, highlighted that globally, women hold only 11% of chief positions in investment management, underscoring the under-representation of women in top financial roles. Addressing these gender biases is crucial for achieving a more equitable distribution of promotions within the industry. Educating and raising awareness about these biases will be instrumental in fostering a fairer and more inclusive promotion process, ultimately contributing to a balanced representation of women in leadership positions in the financial services sector.
