  • ARC-Assure is grateful for the opportunity to serve as an independent Work Safety Health (WSH) consultant during the oil spill cleanup across the affected sites in Singapore. Ensuring the highest standards of workplace health and safety has been essential in safeguarding the well-being of the frontliners involved throughout the cleanup phase. On the 2nd of October, we had the privilege of attending the Oil Spill Cleanup Appreciation Event, where our Regional Manager, Jonathan Shim, proudly accepted a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of ARC-Assure from Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu. We are honored to be recognized for our contributions to this vital effort. A special mention goes to ARC-Assure project team members Brian Hayter and Kiwi Pang for their tireless commitment, exemplary efforts, and outstanding leadership throughout the project. #WorkplaceSafety #HealthAndSafety #OilSpillCleanup #ARC #Compliance #SafetyFirst #Singapore #SafeRoute #Assurance #Resilience

  • Our Regional Manager (Jonathan Shim) and Nuclear SME (Neil McNaughton. CEng. FIMarEST.) were at the New Nuclear for Maritime Summit last week, held in London and organized by CorePower UK Ltd. We had the first-hand opportunity to gain insights into Nuclear Energy and the ambition to integrate it into commercial maritime; it is a variation of clean energy that is not often spoken about but has proven to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions while ensuring energy security to meet future demands. Some key takeaways from the event: 1. Economic viability of new nuclear solutions is undeniably appealing, making it a compelling option for a sustainable zero-emission future. 2. Public perception of nuclear energy remains a challenge, with concerns lingering from historical disasters and association with weaponry. The joint industries, Nuclear and Maritime, need to actively address these concerns through transparent communication and a strong focus on safety. 3. Adoption in the maritime (and potentially other heavy industries) will require a clear roadmap for infrastructure, crew training, and regulatory guidelines. ARC-Assure champions safe and environmentally responsible energy solutions, paving a Safe Route to Maritime Decarbonisation and Energy Security. A big thank you to the organizers at CORE POWER (UK) Ltd and especially Tobi Menzies for chairing this well-run event! #nuclearmaritime #maritimeshipping #decarbonization #newnuclear "The best way to predict the future is to invent it." - Alan Kay (computer scientist)

Here’s something unique you’ve probably never heard of. Gravity being used for storing and producing massive amounts of green energy. Sounds like something out of a science fiction movie. In fact, China has just invested close to $1bn now in deploying five additional gravity-based energy storage systems, which are being looked after by Energy Vault. Curious? Here’s how it started. • The first prototype, tested in Switzerland, involved a crane lifting up two 35-tonne concrete blocks into the air - using motors powered by the Swiss power grid. • For some seconds, the giant concrete blocks remain suspended before the steel cables holding them unspool, and slowly descend.  This is where the magic happens. • As each block descends, the motors that had worked to lift them begin spinning in reverse- which generates a whopping amount of electricity, supplying it back to the power grid. For context: in just 30 seconds of the blocks descending, each block generates close to one megawatt of electricity. Enough for 1,000 homes. We now understand why China has invested heavily in this technology, which marries concrete with steel in an elaborate mechanical dance in order to produce power.  Given its compatibility with the global green energy and net zero targets, I expect other nations to follow suit. The current systems follow the prototype process. Energy Vault says it replicates the gravity-based approach of large-scale pumped-hydro storage, but with lower cost and minus the need for water or specific topographies. In summary: the crane hauls the mammoth bricks upwards to store energy, and releases them to discharge that energy (with gravity being the catalyst). This is controlled by a custom-designed software. A fully-sized version of this system could contain close to 7000 bricks and provide power to multiple thousand homes for a full eight hours. And it can be more scalable than this.  Is this the perfect energy solution we were awaiting? Could it replace wind turbines or is it to work in conjunction? Could any country/geography access it, considering it is less tied to topographic factors? This could solve arguably the biggest problem our transition race to renewables is facing: finding a net-zero way of power generation when the Sun isn’t bright or the wind isn’t strong.  #shipsandshipping #energy #renewableenergy
