How does the language used in asthma care affect you? 🤔 Researchers from Deakin University are inviting people over 18 with asthma to participate in a survey exploring how the words used by your doctor or in asthma information impact your care. If you’ve ever felt stigmatised by the use of certain words relating to your asthma, now is the chance to say something! The results will help us to communicate with our community in more engaging and appropriate ways. Last week, we hosted the quarterly ACT Healthy Schools Network (HSN) meeting at our Asthma Australia office in Chifley! 🙌 It was fantastic to connect with organisations dedicated to supporting children's mental and physical health. The HSN portal is a go-to resource for schools, filled with valuable content covering everything from vaping prevention to RSI in kids, healthy food options, and even our Book a Call service for asthma support. These meetings are all about sharing ideas and information to help improve the well-being of kids across schools. We’re proud to be part of this collaborative effort! ❗ Big news for Queanbeyan-Palerang! ❗ The Regional Council has released a draft policy that would stop new wood heaters from being approved in urban areas when building or renovating homes. This would be a game-changer for people with asthma and many others whose health is negatively affected by wood heater smoke 🙏 We know wood heaters cause significant health damage, with research in the ACT - which is right across the border from the Queanbeyan-Palerang local government area - estimating up to 63 deaths each year are due to wood heater smoke. Wood heaters are the major source of winter air pollution in many towns. But there’s hope for cleaner air! Our consumer research shows that most households in NSW using wood heaters also use an alternative, efficient heating source like reverse cycle air conditioning. We’ve joined the Centre for Safe Air and the HEAL Network to support this policy, which aims to protect health by reducing the number of wood heaters and encouraging modern, efficient heating options.
