Astra Director at AYAA | 2024 Young Australian Space Leader | 2024 Westpac Scholar

Delighted to announce I'll be speaking on the Astra Program at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan next week! I'll be part of the International Astronautical Federation Education and Outreach Symposium, and am really proud to be one of two Australians speaking in the IP sessions for the Symposium. To be able to speak at one of the most important, and largest, space events in the world is a huge honour, especially before I've even finished my undergraduate studies! I'm looking forward to networking, exploring the IAC and Milan, and learning lots of new things. For some nice symmetry I've also been announced as one of the six Young Australian Space Leaders for 2024 by the Australian Youth Aerospace Association (AYAA), who I am so thankful to for supporting my trip to the IAC. The Award recognises young Australians who have had an impact on the Australian space industry and is a really important way for youth in Australia to be represented in the wider space industry. A huge congratulations to my fellow awardees Alana Liebelt, Pat Underwood, Nathanael Vazouras, James Gray and Thomas M.! If you're at IAC , please let me know - I'd love to catch up for a coffee.

🚀 It’s been a few weeks since the 17th Australian Space Forum, and while our time in Adelaide… sorry, Radelaide, was brief, I had such an amazing time and wanted to share some highlights from the experience. First, a huge thank you to The Andy Thomas Space Foundation for sponsoring me and making it all possible. The forum was brimming with inspiration and innovation, and I’m so grateful to have been able to attend through the Astra Program. If you haven't noticed, I love everything space, so a room full of Australia's best and brightest space nerds was bound to be an exciting time. The first two days, together with Irdina Adzahar, Kelly Chen, Khuong Nguyen and Tegan Clark, were all about the forum itself. It was filled with insightful talks, panel discussions, and exhibitions where industry leaders shared their perspectives on the future of space in Australia. I particularly enjoyed hearing from Shaun Kenyon and Dr Sheila Gough Kenyon from Starbound Space Solutions about their Virgil program which helps accelerate assurance and compliance documentation in highly technical domains like space. This has incredible potential, not only in industry but also at the university level, where intricate knowledge of every technical and legal requirement is often sparse. Virgil could provide a streamlined approach for students to familiarise themselves with industry standards before they graduate. This is such a refreshing and novel application of AI in the “AI in everything” market of today, awesome work! Another standout moment was meeting Katherine Bennell-Pegg with some of the Australian members of the Space Generation Advisory Council. Katherine is Australia’s first astronaut to train under the Australian flag. Her dedication to raising awareness and educating the Australian public about how space investments can benefit life here on Earth, along with her support for the next generation of students, was truly inspiring. Thanks again to the Astra Program for this unforgettable experience. ✨

2023 Defence Graduate, former CSIRO space intern (2022-2023), Space enthusiast

55 years ago, on this day, the world stood still to watch Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the Moon. Today, space presents opportunities previously in the realm of science fiction including tourism, low latency constellations in Low Earth Orbit, mining of the moon and asteroids, and colonies in space. Next week, as part of the Astra Program's Emerging Space Pioneer Award cohort, I will be attending the 17th Andy Thomas Space Forum in Adelaide. This was made possible through sponsor iLAuNCH Trailblazer, and I will have the opportunity to understand how Australia will play a role in the rapidly evolving space industry. Image: The Dish movie released in 2000. Classic Australian film about the CSIRO Parkes Telescope and the moon landing, would recommend! #space #Australia #astraprogram
