Take a peek inside Silver Fleece, an Adelaide based, iconic Australian-owned mill dedicated to preserving the craft of knitting with Australian wool, saved from administration by Melanie Flintoff of Sunsetlover and Dean Flintoff. Founded in 1951, Silver Fleece is home to state-of-the-art Japanese knitting machines—the finest in the industry—and a talented team, primarily women, committed to carrying forward this beautiful craft. We were blown away with seamless no-waste knitting, 100year old machinery and the skill needed to create customisation on a range of product made all on site with plans for more. Skills Insight Jobs and Skills Council (JSC) are consulting with stakeholders to identify the opportunities and challenges facing the textiles, clothing and footwear workforce and to assess if the national qualifications meet their needs. They are gathering qualitative data through consultation meetings and surveys. ForestWorks Paul Cavicchia (Project Manager) and Nina Laxmandas (Stakeholder Engagement Manager) have met with a range of stakeholders including manufacturers and training providers for on-site consultation meetings. Yesterday, AFC members gathered together for the Member Forums in Melbourne, supported by #MelbourneFashionWeek. We heard members voice their perspective across the AFCs four key impact areas: Local Manufacturing, Jobs & Skills, Commerce & Trade, and Sustainability. We then layed the groundwork for the Australian Manufacturing Strategy. Members spoke about advocacy and policy to create a thriving manufacturing sector, the importance of education and training and what industry commitments are necessary to drive the industry forward. We need an industry enabled by technology, with clear pathways & connected materials.
