The new stairs, beautifully landscaped garden and stunning deck are a real testament to the power of collaboration! Last month I went behind the scenes to photograph and document the pollination process of #Putricia at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney. This is the first time an Amorphophallus titanum has flowered in Sydney in 15 years, and the mood was high! Tens of thousands queued to see the dank damsel in all her glory, no doubt raising awareness to the efforts of conservation horticulture globally. A major shift is happening for urban green infrastructure in Australia. For the first time, 12 peak industry bodies, representing more than 23,900 professionals and over 500,000 jobs, have come together to call for urban green infrastructure to be treated as essential infrastructure. This is a defining moment for the future of our cities. AGIN has played a key role in bringing this collaboration together through the National Urban Green Infrastructure Round Table. The result is Australia’s first industry-supported Position Statement on Urban Green Infrastructure, setting out six key recommendations to ensure UGI is recognised, valued, and integrated into national infrastructure frameworks. This is about moving UGI from an afterthought to a priority. It’s critical infrastructure that reduces climate risks like extreme heat and flooding, supports biodiversity, and improves public health. Every dollar invested in urban greening returns four dollars in economic benefits, yet UGI remains undervalued and underfunded in infrastructure budgets. That needs to change. The evidence is clear. Now is the time to secure national standards, formal asset classification, long-term funding, and workforce capacity building for urban green infrastructure. Our cities depend on it.
