In the latest Beyond City Limits series, we travelled to Rockhampton and Mackay in central Queensland to find out why anaesthetists are attracted to the region. The anaesthesia departments at Mackay Base Hospital and, 335 km south, Rockhampton Hospital, are keen to showcase the benefits of living and working outside metropolitan centres. Attracting consultants can be challenging but the anaesthesia departments at both central Queensland hospitals hope they can convince other fellows, specialist international medical graduates (SIMGs) and trainees of the benefits of settling there. Dr Andrew Potter is the 2025 ANZCA Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) Convenor and part of our Cairns Regional Organising Committee. #ASM25CNS When reflecting on the work that has gone into the ASM so far, Andy says "I’m especially proud to have an incredible team, predominately based out of our anaesthetic department at Cairns Hospital. "They have been working and supporting each other through the challenges of putting together an extensive program that should satisfy your yearnings for knowledge and your CPD requirements while allowing you to reconnect with colleagues from near and far." When we asked why he thinks delegates should come to Cairns: "Cairns will offer you the opportunity to learn, network and socialise in one of Australia’s truly iconic destinations where our compact and vibrant tropical city will showcase the environmental wonders of the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, all on your doorstep."
