Exciting news! 🎉 Five Indigenous Biosecurity Trainees have begun a journey of up to 2 years under the Indigenous Ranger Biosecurity Program. The Indigenous Biosecurity Traineeship initiative aims to boost employment opportunities for First Nations candidates in biosecurity roles. Trainees will gain hands-on experience across various government agencies and non-government organisations, developing vital skills and earning a Certificate III in Government upon completion. With trainees based in their own communities across northern Australia - specifically in Darwin, Cairns, and Waiben and Saibe Islands in Torres Strait - this initiative is a significant investment in the future of biosecurity and strengthening community and stakeholder connections. Travelling or returning to Australia? Check biosecurity requirements before you pack and declare food, plant material (including wooden articles), animal products and dirty shoes, clothing or equipment. Some items from overseas can carry serious pests and diseases. Leaving these items behind will save you extra costs, lengthy delays or loss of goods in Australia. If you’re unsure, be sure to declare on arrival to avoid penalties or visa cancellation. Changes to the Australian agricultural levies legislative framework are in effect as of 1 January 2025. The new legislation is more streamlined, flexible and consistent. This makes it easier for both levy payers and recipients of levy funds to understand their obligations. It also makes it easier for industry bodies to pursue new levies and amendments to existing levies. The key features of the levy system remain the same, and there is no change to existing levy rates, the bodies that receive levies, or the purposes for which levies can be established and used.
