About us
The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) provides advice to governments on energy market development and is the rule maker for Australian electricity and gas markets. We take a long-term view of what needs to be done to assure consumers of reliable, secure, electricity and gas services at the best price. The National Electricity Rules, National Gas Rules and Retail Energy Rules impact on how market participants can operate in the competitive wholesale generation and retail sectors; provide specific rights for consumers to whom energy is sold or supplied; and also govern the economic regulation of electricity transmission and distribution services – the ‘poles and wires’ – and gas pipelines. Stakeholder concerns are at the heart of our work. Our stakeholders help shape our thinking and provide valuable input to our rule making and advice to governments.

Today we announced a rule change that will introduce greater flexibility in allocating costs for critical interconnector projects across the National Electricity Market. Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) Chair Anna Collyer said “Improving the connectivity between states and territories who participate in the National Energy Market is an important component of Australia transitioning to net zero. “This rule change request from Ministers provides more flexibility to ensure these critical projects can proceed in a timely manner for the benefit of consumers.” The rule change was proposed jointly by the Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen MP, the Victorian Minister for Energy and Resources, Lily D'Ambrosio MP, and the Tasmanian Minister for Energy and Renewables, Nick Duigan MLC.

Yesterday was R U OK? day and we had the privilege and pleasure of having Arabella Gibson from Gidget Foundation Australia come into the AEMC to inspire and empower us to meaningfully connect with the people around us, to start talking, and importantly, to start listening. Gidget Foundation Australia is a not-for-profit organisation that exists to support the mental health of expectant parents, new parents, and their families, to ensure they receive accessible, timely and specialist care. Arabella spoke to us about the prevalence of perinatal depression and anxiety - 1 in 5 mothers and 1 in 10 fathers are affected in Australia, which amounts to around 100,000 Australians each year. On R U OK day we are reminded - by simply starting a conversation you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up. So start talking, and start listening. By having regular, meaningful conversations, you build trust and normalise talking about what’s really going on, so when the people in your world find themselves struggling, they know you’re someone they can talk to. #ruok Photos: Arabella Gibson, CEO of the Gidget Foundation Australia and Anna Collyer, Chair of the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC).
