📝 NDIS news: reforms bill passes senate Today, the National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Getting the NDIS Back on Track No. 1) Bill 2024 has passed through the Senate. It will now go back to the lower house, where it’s expected to pass with government support. This bill introduces an 8% cap on growth and imposes stricter eligibility criteria for services, aiming to achieve savings of $14.4 billion over the next four years. However, significant concerns remain about the implications. There are issues around the limited community consultation, the increased authority of the NDIA, and the need for improved mechanisms for participants to contest decisions. The government has committed to engaging with the community post-passage of the bill. It's crucial for all stakeholders in our community to ensure their voices are part of this conversation. 📢 Minister Bill Shorten has announced a short public consultation on draft lists of NDIS Supports, aiming to clarify what the NDIS will and won’t fund under proposed changes to the NDIS Act currently before Parliament. The proposed lists, based on current guidance, will serve as a transitional rule until a formal agreement is reached between the Australian Government and all states and territories. The consultation period is open until 18 August 2024, calling for feedback on the draft lists. 🤝 The Afford Inclusion Council recently met with our Board Directors for the very first time. This Council is made up members who provide insights into the lived experience of our clients, families and carers to better inform Board discussions and decisions. 🍽️ The initial meeting was casual, aimed at building relationships over lunch and setting the stage for future collaboration. Council members were asked, “What’s one thing you would like to say to the Board?” One member shared their personal experience at Afford, while another inquired about the Board’s vision for the future. 🎬✨ Bus Stop Films has unveiled a stellar lineup of speakers for its inaugural Driving Change Summit. Set to take place over two days on Monday, 18 November, and Tuesday, 19 November, this summit will delve into the employment of people with disability across the screen industry. Headlining the event with a keynote address is internationally renowned disability advocate Keely Cat-Wells, Founder and CEO of Making Space. Keely will share her groundbreaking work in disrupting employment practices and policies in Hollywood. The summit will also feature fantastic speakers, including the Minister for Social Services, the Hon Amanda Rishworth; Australia’s most celebrated interviewer, Leigh Sales AM; Louise Yates, the first person with a physical disability to hold a regular role on Australian TV, plus many more.
