Australian Honours and Awards
Government Administration
The Australian Honours and Awards system celebrates people who go above and beyond, making our community a better place.
About us
The Australian Honours and Awards system, administered by the Office of the Official Secretary to the Governor-General, recognises the outstanding service and contributions of Australians. Recipients come from all over the country and from diverse backgrounds, and while some are well-known Australians, the majority are unsung heroes. The Australian Honours and Awards system includes the Order of Australia, meritorious awards, military awards and Australian bravery decorations. While typically recipients haven’t sought thanks or recognition, they deserve both. This page will be used to tell recipients’ stories, highlighting the diverse ways they impact our community. We will also provide guidance about how to nominate someone for recognition in the Order of Australia. This is because while anyone can be recognised in the Order of Australia, no-one can be without being nominated. If you know anyone you think is worthy of recognition, nominate them now at our website.

As Greg Aldridge OAM sat through his investiture ceremony at Government House Canberra in September, he reflected on the journey that brought him there. Mr Aldridge is CEO of EveryMan Australia, who provide services to men at risk of exclusion, discrimination and marginalisation no matter who they are, or their history. He has also been a member of the Domestic Violence Prevention Council, coordinator of White Ribbon Capital Region, and a psychologist. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to community health. “A lot of the guys that we work with have quite serious health issues, but we often tell people we’re not a men’s health service … it’s a contribution to community health,” he explains. “We work with men with mental health issues, with physical health issues ... but I think my particular focus over the past 10 to 15 years, or longer than that, has been in creating a place for men who don’t fit very easily into other services, and making sure they get the services that they have an entitlement to. “We know it’s in their interests, but also those around them.” Read more about Mr Aldridge here: https://lnkd.in/gXWMzXxe EveryMan Australia White Ribbon Australia

Jaru/Kija woman Cissy Gore-Birch OAM has been inspired by an inner need to help others in her community. “The greatest impact of the work that I do has been the profound influence on strengthening the community and bridging the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians,” she says. She was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the indigenous community of WA – including as co-chair of the Indigenous Carbon Industry Network and Wildfire Resilient Landscape Network; and director of the International Savanna Fire Management Initiative, Aboriginal Clean Energy Project, and Kimberly Cultural Connections Pty Ltd. “My work in conservation and land management, as well as my participation on various boards, has ensured that Aboriginal people continue to have a voice and are engaged in leading critical conversations.” Read more about Cissy Gore-Birch OAM here: https://lnkd.in/gfWythcv Indigenous Carbon Industry Network Rock Art Australia Balanggarra Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC First Nations Clean Energy Network Impact North #OrderofAustralia #NominateToday #AustralianHonoursandAwards

In early September, the Governor hosted investiture ceremonies for recipients in the 2024 King's Birthday Honours. Over two days, Government House Victoria welcomed around 1,000 guests to celebrate the contributions of some outstanding Victorians. In her address, the Governor remarked that: "In recognising these achievements, we speak to what we value as a community, and the kinds of characteristics and ideas that we wish to celebrate. Indeed, nearly half of this year’s awards honour service to various Victorian communities – particularly those in regional and rural areas." Karen Noonan OAM was among those recognised for their dedication to their community. Find out about Karen’s story, what this recognition meant to her and how you can nominate someone you know for the Order of Australia https://lnkd.in/gREGncih Australian Honours and Awards #OrderOfAustralia #AboveandBeyond #AustralianHonours #AustralianHonoursandAwards #NominateToday

Dr Buuloc Lam OAM has made a significant impact on the oral hygiene of people worldwide and in her local community. The Canberra based dentist saw a need for urgent dental treatment and oral hygiene education during visits to Vietnam and Nepal. “There’s so many kids that nobody looked after,” Dr Lam says. “I dare to go in and do it and I make someone happy and I make someone out of pain, out of misery and that's what makes me go on – I think I’m addicted to it!.” She is a pro bono dentist for the The Salvation Army Australia, Karinya House for Mothers & Babies and the Kushudebu Public Health Mission in Nepal, as well as owning a dental surgery in Canberra. Dr Lam is also a member of several committees within the Children's Health Aid Team (CHAT), which provides medical and dental services to disadvantaged children and their carers throughout Vietnam. She was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to dentistry, and to humanitarian dental care. “I think a lot of dentists are worried that, you know, it's out of my comfort zone. Can I do it? I just hope that they see it and say, yes, she can do it, so I can do it so more people get help.” Celebrate someone who makes a difference today by nominating them for the Order of Australia. From a young age, Tim Low AM has been dedicated to nature and its protection. In 2002, Mr Low helped found the Invasive Species Council, he has authored best-selling books on the environment and conservation and has co-edited and contributed to several publications including Wildlife Australia magazine, Nature Australia magazine and Australian Geographic. This year he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to conservation, and to environmental education and awareness. “Since childhood I have thought of nature as amazing and deserving our respect … I have realised that most people don’t see it that way, so I made it my life’s work to try and promote greater awareness of nature and the pressures it faces.” You can read more about Tim Low AM here: https://lnkd.in/g6NWXXyV The Order of Australia is a great way to recognise and celebrate those who go above and beyond.
