In the Sep/Oct edition of Architecture Australia, Stuart Harrison reviews Munro Development and narrm ngarrgu Library and Family Services by Six Degrees Architects and Bates Smart: “The material palette through the library interior is diverse. The concrete structure and services are exposed but plenty of timber and painted steel is layered, and there are moments of bright colour, particularly in staircases, and some glam goldish finishes to the library counter and lift car interior. This rich blend of materials, served in a didactic way, clearly demonstrates Six Degrees’ years of experience in designing hospitality spaces.” Read the review in the current issue of AA here: https://aus.archi/aa Munro Development and narrm ngarrgu Library and Family Services | Traditional Owners: The Wurundjeri People | Architect: Six Degrees Architects and Bates Smart | Builder: Buildcorp Group and Hamilton Marino | Facade screens: Rose Nolan, Artwork on carpet, mirrors and sculpture: Maree Clarke | Image: Dan Preston | Writer: Stuart Harrison #design #architecturedesign #architect #architecture #architectural #architects #architectureanddesign #contemporaryarchitecture #AustralianArchitecture #AustralianArchitects

Have you worked on a project that embodies cultural wisdom in climate adaptation? As part of its "Wisdom of Tradition" initiative, the UIA - International Union of Architects Sustainability Commission is calling for project submissions for publication. The Commission seeks completed projects that explore how to repurpose traditional knowledge and practices in a contemporary context. Some projects may also incorporate modern technologies. The objective is to showcase inherent wisdom of traditions and their potential to inspire contemporary sustainable solutions, while avoiding nostalgia and imitation. Two types of projects may be submitted: – Constructed projects. – Restoration projects utilising novel sustainable techniques. The call for projects closes on 30 November 2024 at 18:00 Paris time. “In 2020-2022, as creative director of the City of Melbourne’s Flash Forward project,” writes Lachlan MacDowall, “I curated the installation of 40 art works in Melbourne’s laneways. Drawing on Melbourne’s rich archive of graffiti and street art, Flash Forward commissions would be semi-permanent additions to the city becoming, over time, part of the identity of Melbourne and the next layer of the archive.” Read more here: https://aus.archi/0wdq From: Architect Victoria | Radical inclusion + Melbourne’s new identity | Edition 2 | 2024 Bootleg Comics, Untitled (2022) / Jarra Steel, You are on Country (2022) / MERDA, Pythagoras (2021) for the Flash Forward project | Traditional Owners: Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country | Photographer: Nicole Reed | Writer: Lachlan MacDowall #ArchitectureDesign #Architecture #Architect #AustralianArchitecture #Design #InteriorDesign #ContemporaryArchitecture #Architects #AustralianArchitects #VictoriaArchitecture #Melbourne #streetart #flashfwdmelb

Circling back to an impactful event featuring industry pioneers. Katie Skillington and Nikita Bhopti are sharing key takeaways from the discussions on transitioning to a circular economy. Challenging the audience to reshape their processes, values, and design practice to place more value on existing buildings and materials, the speakers asked how architects could shift from the modus operandi of the linear to a more circular, regenerative future. What resonated most with you, and how can we implement these insights in real-world scenarios? This online CPD session reflects on what the group behind Nightingale Village set out to do, what now stands, and what might be the next frontier. 1 Formal CPD Point. Thursday 24 October 12.00-1.00pm AEDT Register here: https://aus.archi/zfm9 Speakers: Victoria Reeves – Director of Architecture at Kennedy Nolan Architects Clare Cousins – Director of Clare Cousins Architects In 2017, a group of six architects; Architecture architecture, Austin Maynard Architects, Breathe, Clare Cousins Architects, Hayball and Kennedy Nolan, came together to develop a housing precinct in Brunswick under the Nightingale model. Faithful to the model’s charter of the time, but also fueled by each practice’s own experience working in the conventional developer environment, the group aspired to innovation and ‘better than compliant’ environmental performance for the project, from the urban to the interior scale.
