Last month, the Perth Royal Show was on and for the first time in 18 years pigs are back on show!     The Perth Pigs in schools' competition was a great success supported by a strong partnership between RASWA, WAPPA and APL. APL's Rowena Davis was at the show engaging with the show goers and on hand to help with the school competition.     Schools selected and received 5 pigs at 10 weeks of age, with the objective to care for and grow out to commercial specifications.    The schools selected their best 3 pigs to be shown in ring. Dean Rominello from Linley Valley judged the pigs on their temperament, handling ability and commercial attributes. Kelmscot High School took out 1st and 2nd place with just 6 points splitting their entries, with the WA college of agriculture - Cunderdin placing 3rd.      Schools were then given the opportunity to give a presentation to the public on a subject that is import to the Australian Pork Industry where the students were assessed on their presentation and research skills, presentations included Biosecurity and Enrichment for Pigs.      At the end of the Perth Royal Show the Pigs in schools' competition entries will be processed at Linley Valley and judged over the hook by Dr Megan Trezona - stay tuned for the results!    Other attractions include:   - Sows and Litters on display from WestPork  - Pat a Pig  - Wash a pig, with informational talks   - Alex Crisp (MasterChef Australia) pork cooking demonstration with an informational talk from Linton Batt.

Since The Official Great Aussie Pie Competition began in 1989 it has provided an official industry backed endorsement of the greatest pies and sausage rolls in the country.     APL are proud to sponsor the gourmet pork category for this year's competition which was held at Fine Food Australia in Melbourne, 2-5 September.     16 of Australia’s most dedicated pie lovers took on the tough task of judging pies from all over Australia.    This year over 1,500 pies were entered into the competition, across five titles and 13 gourmet sub-categories.    Congratulations Fourseasons Cafe Patisserie from High Wycombe, WA, winning the 2024 Gourmet Pork Pie Category Award with their Red Curried Pork Pie. #AustralianPork #OfficialGreatAussiePieCompetition #AussiePieCouncil #AussiePies #OGAPCJudges #PieJudges #AussieSausageRolls #AussiePasties #Pie #SausageRoll #Pastie #Australia #OGAPC

This month some of the APL team travelled to Port Macquarie for the 2024 Australian Meat Industry Council (AMIC) NSW Sausage King and Best Butchers Burger competition.    Over three days, alongside qualified chefs and other industry parties, over 300 sausages and burgers were judged from entries received across NSW and ACT.    Products were judged on the following:   - Visual Uncooked  - Visual Cooked   - Texture  - Flavour    APL are proud to be sponsoring the Pork category winner and there were some fantastic entries in the Pork Sausage category this year.    The judging was held at TAFE NSW and it was fantastic to taste a range of exciting flavour combinations along with extremely well-crafted traditional sausages. Good luck to all the butchers entering Sausage King.    Winners will be announced on 12 October, keep an eye out to find out where to get your hands on this year's best pork sausage in NSW and ACT. #AustralianPork

On Wednesday 4 September, APLs PorkStar . celebrated the versatility of Australian Pork on stage with Straight To The Source at the Fine Food Australia exhibition held at the Melbourne Convention Centre.    The session featured executive chef Brendan Katich from Reine and La Rue, and Nomad Melbourne who came together with Mick Nunn – Salt Kitchen Charcuterie, and celebrated pork farmer Judy Croagh from Western Plains Pork.    Diving into quality, versatility and sustainability – quality versatility of Australian pork was showcased through a demonstration of Nomad Melbourne’s iconic pork chop. Exploration of sustainability was provided with Salt Kitchen’s whole beast philosophy, amazing charcuterie, and a discussion on sustainable farming.    The session was a great success with the foodservice industry enjoying an array of experiences which included tasting and hearing the amazing work that our producers and PorkStars do day to day bring more sustainable pork to the menu.

Fine Foods is considered one of the leading events for the food industry and this month Australian Pork had a presence in various iterations across the show.     Continuing our long-standing relationship with Nestle Professional, we had the great pleasure of showcasing Australian Pork to the finalists from the competition. Together with PorkStar ., we hosted a comprehensive educational morning with farmer Judy Croagh where chef and charcuterie maker Mick Nunn broke down the forequarter and showcased the smallgoods that he makes from each cut.    Mick’s talk highlighted the importance of fresh Australian pork in his award winning charcuterie and the importance of his relationship with Western Plains Pork, where his pigs are sourced. Nomad created an inspiring brunch menu prepared by Jacqui Challinor and her team, showcasing their nose to tail ethos and their creativity with pork usage.    The finalists enjoyed everything from scotch eggs, smoked ham hock hash browns to sesame and pork fat caramel cookies.       In the spirit of education and future proofing pork on menu, we worked with the Australian Culinary Federation to deliver an educational and informative pork demonstration in their kitchen and sponsored the National Apprentice Competition for the Final Year Apprentices.    The competitors created a three-course meal in 180mins, were given a pork loin roast for their main meal, and really showcased the breath of their knowledge with an array of dishes.

Pigs were definitely featured at the Royal Adelaide Show, with all eight breeds of pigs available in Australia on display.     The APL team were onsite to host an information stand at the Adelaide show this year, providing a great opportunity to give showgoers information about all things pig production and pork, as well as supporting the producers who had pigs on display.    The interest of high schools in the School Pig Handling Competition continues to grow, with 90 students representing 11 South Australian high schools competing in 2024. SA producers donated 11 pairs of commercial gilts to the high schools in term 3, providing an opportunity for school agricultural programs to include pigs in their teaching program.     This interest in pigs was further encouraged in the junior pig judging competition and judging workshop run by NSW pig breeder and show judge, James Dockrill. James provided the aspiring young show judges with tips on what to consider when looking for commercial and breeding attributes.     Other attractions in the pig pavilion included:   - Pigs and people talks by Graeme Pope   - Junior Paraders Competition   - Commercial Pork & Bacon Competition   - School Bacon Competition
