About us
The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) is an independent, non-partisan policy institute based in Canberra. It was set up by the government to provide fresh ideas on Australia's defence and strategic policy choices. ASPI is charged with the task of informing the public on strategic and defence issues, generating new ideas for government, and fostering strategic expertise in Australia. It aims to help Australians understand the critical strategic choices which our country will face over the coming years, and to help government make better-informed decisions. www.aspi.org.au

'For now, both sides should be allowed to arm or agree to security arrangements with third parties. Nothing should be done to preclude measures that would buttress a ceasefire. Russia should be permitted to retain North Korean troops on its territory; Ukraine could invite forces from European countries,' writes Richard Haass.

'Defence is pursuing yet another strategic reform agenda, set out in Chapter 11 of the National Defence Strategy. It aims to deliver both strategic reform—the transformation of the core elements of Defence that deliver effects to achieve the strategy of denial—and enterprise reform—the transformation of Defence’s enabling elements that drive performance,' writes Marc Ablong.

Important contribution from ASPI Fellow Ravi Nayyar on how fragmentation of cyber regulation in the Indo-Pacific is not just inconvenient, it’s a strategic vulnerability making us less safe. Well done Ravi 👏 🚨Watch this space. More to come from ASPI and Ravi.
From my latest piece for the Australian Strategic Policy Institute: '[Jurisdictions] may prefer to clean the cobwebs through visible operational reactions rather than kill the spider through holistic, long-term preparation. 'Be it via multi-stakeholder collaboration or multilateral regulatory diplomacy, tackling regulatory fragmentation will make the Indo-Pacific more cyber-resilient'. Many, many thanks to James Corera and Bart Hogeveen for all their help in developing and refining this piece, written as part of ASPI's project with MSFT on regulatory fragmentation re cyber resilience in the Indo-Pacific. Especially grateful to James and Bart for providing me such a great space to explore regulatory theory and how it relates to the cybers, something very close to my heart. cc: Glenn, GREG, Dr. Alexandra, Veronika, Ross, Cameron

'Use law to counter Trump’s lawlessness. The rule of law is not simply a code of conduct approved by duly constituted authorities. It is an entire system designed to channel dispute away from the battlefield and into the courts, to replace armed combat with legal jousting before an impartial referee,' writes Anne-Marie Slaughter.

Since coming into office, Trump has signed several energy and mineral executive orders. The Trump administration wants to establish US energy and mineral 'dominance', and rapidly expanded US production may have serious consequences for Australia and the international market. For those interested, initial risks and opportunities of changing US mineral policy are discussed in my latest Australian Strategic Policy Institute Strategist article.
