The Global Stocktake released at last year’s COP28 revealed we are not on track to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees – and the window for meaningful change is closing quickly. At the same time, Australia is rapidly progressing its sustainable finance agenda. Off the back of the Global Nature Positive Summit, we were delighted to be joined by Minister for the Environment and Water Tanya Plibersek for a fireside chat discussing the government’s nature positive agenda. We heard key outcomes from the Summit, the Government’s vision for its recently established ‘Nature Positive Matters’ to drive private investment in nature repair, and the role of First Nations in leading the transition to a nature positive, climate resilient and net zero future. “Australia, as a trusted middle power…can play a leadership role, not just keep up with the pack.” We look forward to continuing to work closely with the Government to drive nature positive outcomes in Australia and our region. Innovative finance solutions are the key to mobilising private capital to achieve our sustainability objectives. In a fascinating ‘Innovative Finance spotlight’ at our 2024 Summit we explored how financial innovation can mobilise capital to achieve our sustainability goals. Frank Richter and Helen Bobiwash, FCPA, FCMA, CAFM, GCB.D, CCB.D, ICD.D opened the session with insights from Canada’s Indigenous Growth Fund to explore how financial innovation can drive inclusive economic growth and self-determination for First Nations communities. We were then joined by Durreen Shahnaz, Katharine Tapley, Lori Kerr and Nicholas Mant, CFA GAICD to discuss how successful blended finance approaches and opportunities can catalyse more investment for sustainability at home and in the Asia-Pacific. Unlocking capital to enable equitable partnerships and economic self-determination for First Nations businesses and communities is integral to the sustainable finance agenda. It was fantastic to delve into opportunities for advancing economic reconciliation earlier today at our 2024 Summit. Te Pūoho Katene gave a thought-provoking keynote on what can be achieved when First Nations communities have control of their economic futures. Te Pūoho, Stephanie King, Albert Wiggan and Rekeesha F. then explored how First Nations communities can transition from stakeholders to shareholders, driving sustainable economic development and innovative finance models to unlock capital. Today, ASFI has announced our new partnership with First Nations Projects Group (FNPG) to scope and incubate a new organisation dedicated to supporting First Nations, industry and government to successfully deliver equitable partnerships in major projects on country. What's Next? We'll be engaging with communities, stakeholders, and experts to ensure this new entity represents and benefits all parties involved, with a focus on empowering First Nations through economic participation and environmental stewardship.
