As the Australian Design Council enters its second year, our focus is to roll out our program of work with businesses, community groups, government, and the design community to continue our mission to leverage Australia’s design-led innovation capability to deliver long-term growth and national prosperity.   We are excited to be launching and scaling the Design Review platform, along with integrated initiatives such as the Australian Design Impact Showcase, Australian Design Impact Report, Australian Design Impact Award 2025, and the Australian Design Index. Our program of work serves as a vehicle to amplify the positive impact good design has on our economy, society, environment and Australia’s culture. Jane Aslanidis, our Program Director will be leading this work.   As we make this transition to program delivery, the Board would like to say a special thanks to Steve Baty who has been our CEO for the past 12 months and whose contract comes to an end on October 18. Steve has been critical in this formative stage, and we thank him for building our strong foundations. With Steve as the CEO, we have achieved a lot over the past year: launching and awarding the inaugural Australian Design Impact Award; working with industry and the design community to develop and pilot the Design Review Program - aimed at boosting Australia’s design-led innovation capability; and working to promote the role of design in critical transitions for our nation - in innovation, creativity and circularity.   We know Steve is thankful for the welcoming and collaborative response from his peers in many different industries who’ve been willing to engage on these important topics and help build our strong foundations.    We look forward to continuing to work with Steve as a design leader in our world class design community.

Bega Group is proud to announce that the Bega Circular Valley has been awarded the 2024 Australian Design Council Design Impact Award at the recent Australian Good Design Awards Ceremony.   The award recognises an organisation that demonstrates the ability to be truly transformative, with design at its core, that will deliver long-term growth, national prosperity and cultural enrichment for Australia.   It is a great honour to receive this award for the Bega Circular Valley program which aims to create Australia’s most Circular Regional Economy in Bega Valley Shire.   Bega Group would like to thank the Australian Design Council for the recognition and congratulate all members, partners and supporters of the Bega Circular Valley program.

NSW Small Business Commissioner will debut the Sydney Expo tomorrow for NSW Small Business Month - October 2024. This has been designed to provide small businesses with quality opportunities to network, develop skills and gain knowledge. A national award with a history dating back to the 1950s has been revived as part of the Australian Design Council’s push to embed design at the centre of national business decisions, delivering wide-ranging benefits to business and the community.

Design Impact Award: Celebrating the impact design creates for Australia Announcing the Inaugural Australian Design Council Design Impact Award to Honour an Organisation Shaping Australia’s Design-led Future Across our Economy, Society, Environment and Culture. Established in 2024, with a prestigious heritage dating back to the 1950s, the Australian Design Council Design Impact Award inaugural winner has been announced at the 2024 Australian Good Design Awards Ceremony. The 2024 Australian Design Council Design Impact Award goes to: Bega Circular Valley Barry Irvin AM Chair, Regional Circularity Co-operative Limited Executive Chairman, Bega Group With full focus on honouring an exceptional Australian organisation that utilises design as a strategic tool to drive commercial success, while also making notable contributions to societal, environmental and cultural outcomes. The Award was judged on three main criteria: Design Leadership, Design Impact and Designing with People.

Good Design Australia's Australian Good Design Awards Ceremony will be hosted by the one and only Gold Logie Winner, Larry Emdur. Special guests include Dr. Thomas Garvey, President of the World Design Organization (WDO) and other design and industry dignitaries. The Awards Ceremony promises to be an unforgettable evening celebrating The Design Effect – the theme for this year’s Awards. Excited to share some impactful initiatives I’m driving at the Australian Design Council over the coming weeks. Keep your eyes peeled! The current program of work is focused on leveraging Australia’s design-led innovation capability to foster long-term growth, national prosperity, and cultural enrichment. Design is about using creativity to solve problems, and it's crucial that everyone in this space is recognised for their contributions. Through active listening to Australia’s design community, we’ve identified a gap in the current labour market. The Australian Bureau of Statistics standard classification of occupations doesn’t account for key roles in strategic design and service design. This oversight limits our ability to fully harness Australia’s world-class design sector. Improving the accuracy of ABS data is just the beginning. This step creates the opportunity for enhanced education pathways, clearer skills development, and more effective career guidance. Collaboration is key to progress, and I’m grateful for the connection to University of Technology Sydney Cameron Tonkinwise Zoë Rose and Design Institute of Australia Jo Kellock Laura Kostanski Simon Goodrich.
