We help protect the safety of the Australian community through high-quality education standards and skills assessments.

About us

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) protects the health and safety of the Australian community by: Establishing high quality education standards, assessing and accrediting nursing, midwifery and other healthcare education programs. Assessing and validating the skills, qualifications and experience of overseas qualified nurses, midwives and health care workers to support their skilled migration journey. We work to ensure every nurse, midwife and health care worker commencing work in the Australian community is a safe, culturally aware, and competent practitioner in accordance with current standards ANMAC is the national Accreditation Authority for the nursing profession and the midwifery profession appointed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). As a part of this function ANMAC ensures the development of high-quality education standards and accredits and monitors education programs leading to registration as a nurse or midwife in Australia. ANMAC assesses and validates the skills, qualifications and experience of nurses, midwives and other healthcare workers seeking migration to Australia and provides support to ensure an effective migration journey. ANMAC does this under the authority of the Australian Government. Operating independently from the NMBA, Ahpra, and government departments, we are committed to maintaining the quality and integrity of Australia’s healthcare workforce. Through ongoing collaboration with the nursing profession, the midwifery profession, skilled migrants, education providers, regulatory agencies, and industry stakeholders, we ensure that our work aligns with evolving community needs and standards. Our work is guided by the values of Integrity, Excellence, Collaboration, Innovation, and Respect, which are at the core of everything we do.

  • For more than a century, women in nursing and midwifery have been breaking barriers, leading change, and shaping healthcare for future generations. As two of the first professions to offer women financial independence, professional recognition, and a pathway to leadership, nursing and midwifery have played pivotal roles in advancing equity and inclusion in healthcare. At ANMAC, we are proud to support this legacy. Through accreditation, and skilled migration services, we help ensure that nurses and midwives joining Australia’s workforce are equipped to lead, innovate, and provide safe, high-quality care. Today, we honour the women who have shaped, and continue to shape, healthcare by accelerating action for a stronger, more inclusive future. Together, we can build a more equitable and empowered healthcare workforce. #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2025 #Equityinhealthcare #Nurses #Midwives #AccelerateAction

  • The expansion of Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items for endorsed midwives is a significant step forward in improving access to midwifery-led continuity of care across Australia. Announced last week by Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care and for Indigenous Health, Ged Kearney, these changes came into effect on March 1st, enabling midwives to work to their full scope of practice in primary care and improving maternity outcomes for women and families. There are now more than 1,355 endorsed midwives providing primary maternity care in Australia - a number that has doubled in just four years. This growth reflects increasing consumer demand for midwifery-led care, as well as the strong appetite from midwives to pursue this career path. ANMAC is committed to ensuring midwives are well-equipped to meet this demand and deliver high-quality, evidence-based care. These MBS changes, alongside expanded scholarships for postgraduate midwifery study, further strengthen the midwifery workforce and improve access to maternity care across the country. #Midwifery #ANMAC #Continuityofcare
