The Director-General of the Australian Submarine Agency, Vice Admiral Jonathan Mead delivered his keynote address to delegates attending the Indian Ocean Defence and Security Conference today. Vice Admiral Mead addressed Defence and Industry leaders about the challenging strategic circumstances Australia faces and how the #AUKUS partnership is a necessary and prudent response to the environment. “It is wonderful to be back in Western Australia - the home of Australia’s submarines. This proud tradition will continue for decades ahead as Western Australia plays such a critical role in delivering the Optimal Pathway for Australia’s acquisition of a conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarine capability, ” Vice Admiral Mead said. “We have taken significant, tangible steps to implement work here in Western Australia and in all three AUKUS nations. Delivering this game-changing capability is the clearest demonstration of our collective resolve.” “At the heart of Australia’s intent behind acquiring an SSN capability is to make our contribution to the security of our region which is so fundamental to our nation's future.”

  • The Australian Submarine Agency was established 12 months ago today. In the last year we have made strong progress across training, industry, workforce development, port visits and infrastructure. Highlights include: ⚓️ In August 2023 we had the first Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarine visit, the USS North Carolina to HMAS Stirling, and a second visit in March 2024 by USS Annapolis. 🏗 In March 2024, we announced ASC Pty Ltd and BAE Systems as build partners for Australia’s SSN-AUKUS submarines, and ASC Pty Ltd as Australia’s nuclear-powered submarine sustainment partner. 👩🎓 In April 2024, we saw three Officers became the first from the Royal Australian Navy to graduate from the Submarine Officer Basic Course in Groton Connecticut. They are now assigned to US Virginia-class submarines at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. There remains a lot of work still to be done, and every day matters. The work implementing the pathway for Australia’s acquisition of conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines is on track and with significant milestones achieved. Australia is leveraging the significant experience, skills, knowledge and training opportunities of our #AUKUS partners to accelerate Australia’s path to becoming ready to own, operate, maintain, sustain and regulate our own fleet of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines.

  • This week the Director-General of the Australian Submarine Agency Vice Admiral Jonathan Mead spoke at an Australian Industry & Defence Network (AIDN National) event in Canberra. Vice Admiral Mead highlighted the strong progress #AUKUS is making, working closely with our UK and US partners on the many steps required for this momentous, nation-building program. “AUKUS will transform our workforce - providing a major boost to Australian industry, jobs and infrastructure for decades to come.” “Many people are working day and night, shoulder to the wheel, to deliver the capability Australia needs to safeguard our future and protect our region. The momentum continues, and we remain on track to deliver on the Pathway we unveiled in March 2023.”

Congratulations to ASC’s skilled submarine workers from South Australia and Western Australia, who are the first to deploy to the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard for training. This cohort of around 30, will grow to over 100 workers who will be trained in the maintenance of Virginia class nuclear-powered submarines alongside their US counterparts. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles, SA Premier Peter Malinauskas in Adelaide and WA Minister Paul Papalia in Perth, met with some of the workers to farewell them on this very exciting step towards Australian workers acquiring the knowledge and knowhow that will be essential to build, operate and sustain our future nuclear‑powered submarines. 📰 Read More: https://lnkd.in/gJfPSMAC

The US Naval Submarine School in Groton, Connecticut, U.S. has welcomed nine sailors and three officers from the Royal Australian Navy. This marks another significant step for Australia’s acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines (SSNs). The 12 members of Royal Australian Navy will undergo two courses to learn and experience the fundamentals of the construction and operation of nuclear-powered submarines. Upon graduation, these sailors and officers will be assigned to US SSNs to further their knowledge and training.
