Congratulations to our Director of Policy and Industry Engagement Bridget R. who has joined the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO)'s inaugural Consumer and Community Reference Group. We look forward to Bridget bringing vital community perspectives to help inform AEMO's day-to-day work and future planning.
AEMO congratulates the 11 members joining our inaugural Consumer and Community Reference Group (CCRG), who represent a diverse range of interests from households and businesses to First Nations peoples, regional communities, and agricultural and environmental groups. Together, the CCRG will provide strategic insights and advice into AEMO across a range of energy issues, bringing consumer and community perspectives to AEMO’s day-to-day work and future planning. The Queensland Government has released the updated wind planning code, State Code 23, which will require wind farm developers to better manage issues such as soil erosion, site rehabilitation and noise. The State Government has also outlined a plan to implement broader planning reviews for large-scale renewable energy projects to improve community engagement and protect valuable biodiversity. Today’s announcements are a great step in the right direction! We’ve been working hard alongside other environmental groups like Cairns and Far North Environment Centre (CAFNEC) to campaign for stronger renewable energy planning laws that will better protect nature and ensure that regional communities benefit from the transition. We’ll continue to prioritise this work ☀️ ✊

Exciting news - Andrew Bray and Kitty Walker from RE-Alliance are joining us next month for our 8th webinar! Tune in to hear how they're working to build trust in regional communities hosting critical energy infrastructure ☀ 💡 🤝 When it comes to renewables, what's in it for the regions? How can hosts of renewable energy technology benefit from transition? How can we make sure that the transition policy considers those in the regions as well as cities? Secure your spot to hear Andrew and Kitty discuss these questions and more! ⏰ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm (AWST) 📅 Wednesday, 16 October 📍 Online via Zoom 🎟 https://lnkd.in/gYZWNKzW How we talk about renewables in our regional communities matters. We need to build trust in the regions where major infrastructure such as wind, solar, batteries, hydro and transmission lines are urgently needed as ageing coal-fired power stations close and we decarbonise the economy. RE-Alliance has been working with regional communities for more than a decade and plays a unique role in Australia's energy sector - recognised as one of the leading voices on community engagement. #EnergyTransition #CleanEnergy #GreenEnergy #RegionalAustralia #WindFarm #SolarFarm #EnergyInfrastructure #CommunityEngagement Peta Ashworth OAM | Fran Ackermann | Chris Sounness | Laurence Dyer

Last weekend, Yes 2 Renewables (Friends of the Earth Melbourne) - Voices of the Valley, BREAZE, RE-Alliance and our team co-facilitated an #EnergyChampions training in the beautiful City of Ballarat. Once again, we were so inspired and grateful for the stories, and acts of leadership that participants shared around the table, and to each other. A huge thank you to all the collaborators and facilitators, including Wendy Farmer and lead facilitator and organiser Kieran Pradeep, and to the Ballarat Trades Hall for hosting us! Around the table we explored what: 💚 Energy leadership mean to us, but also what barriers there are on individual and community levels to engage in renewable energy conversations. ✍🏻 We talked about what a renewables ‘story of self’ might look like - and built a story of NOW for the members of Ballarat who joined us; exploring why it’s important to speak from the heart, and to find shared values. ⚡ Pat Simons gave an excellent presentation/conversation on how to talk about renewable energy, with some great examples of project scattered right around Ballarat. 🌱 We also brainstormed many great ideas for future projects that the community can benefit from as they become 100% renewable powered. 👥 We heard about amazing work of BREAZE and all they have to offer the community - as a home base for these discussions, and energy champion actions moving forward. ☀️ And we received an absolutely awesome presentation from Tony Goodfellow from Re-Alliance, who provided us with an overview of renewable energy projects around the region, and about the #LocalEnergyHubs project, a project we must all learn more about! Energy Champions trainings are a pilot project aimed to supercharge people in regions zoned for renewable energy projects and developments, so that they can be champions for the kinds of renewable projects that will best serve them. Communities must be supported into the frontline of a fair and fast transformation to renewables. With the people, for the people. We can’t wait to continue working with these Energy Champions, also those in the Latrobe Valley, Sunny Coast and Townsville - as we collectively innovate, inspire, and polish up our leadership toolbox to safeguard all the things we love about the cities and regions we call home, and build the renewables we so desperately need together. #renewableenergy #community #ballarat #energyjustice #climatejustice #leadership

Clean energy is making farms more productive. A former National Farmers Federation President, Brent’s been farming for most of his life. He’s always run beef and sheep, and now hosts a few turbines to help drought-proof his income. Why not let our sun and wind make farms more productive? What does it mean to Renew Australia for All? It's cheaper energy, good jobs, and resilient communities 💪 We're one of the founding organisations of this movement of 50+ groups, including faith groups, environmental organisations, unions, community groups and more, who are working together to deliver a fairer, better and more secure future for all Australians. Last week, over 50+ organisations were in Canberra to launch #RenewAustraliaForAll. We’re a movement of social service organisations, environmental groups, faith organisations, unions, community groups and more, who have come together to fight for a future where clean, renewable energy is accessible to every Australian. The transition to clean energy is already underway, and it’s crucial Australia doesn’t get left behind. Now we need the Federal Government to come to the table and back our plan that will ensure all Australians, businesses and communities share in the benefits of renewable energy. Very pleased to get a chance to talk about one of my favorite topics - the need to properly engage local communities in the shift to clean energy. The starting point has to be information - locally based, easy for people to access, and expressed in ways that makes sense to them in the place they live. It's an insightful piece from Rachel Williamson that combines a bunch of different and thoughtful takes on the issue. RenewEconomy Dennis Freedman
Australians don’t know how far the energy transition has come – and that’s a problem

Day One of the Better Futures Australia Forum 2024 kicked off in Canberra at the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, focusing on local initiatives and national strategies to build a more equitable, climate-resilient future. Key topics included the challenges of decarbonising Australia's energy systems, with $5.4 billion investments in WA for wind energy to exit coal by 2030, BUT still expanding fossil fuel production for exports. Speakers emphasised the importance of an inclusive energy transition, ensuring access to renewable energy for all, especially under-resourced communities. The Forum spotlighted the need to prioritise First Nations self-determination and ensure regional First Nations communities can benefit from access to renewable energy solutions. Speakers also addressed the complexities of the energy transition, including the need for 55,000 apprenticeships by 2027 and retrofitting 9 million homes to ensure no-one misses out in the benefits of Australia’s pivot to clean energy. A key highlight was the Marlinja Community Energy Project, which aims to deliver a just energy transition for First Nations peoples, tackling energy insecurity through a 100% community-owned micro-grid. It was incredibly inspiring hearing from Madie Sturgess and Chantelle Johns on their powerful work through Original Power. Community-led initiatives like RE-Alliance’s work with local councils and the need to shift narratives around renewables to one of shared benefits and local stories was another great takeaway. From supporting disadvantaged communities to building community-owned batteries, the Forum called for stronger government intervention and bold, ambitious packages. The conversations on Day One were full of optimism and commitment to democratising renewable energy in Australia. Looking forward to Day 2 today!
