Yesterday, Qantas workers and the unions representing them under the Qantas Engineers’ Alliance made of the AMWU, AWU and ETU rallied outside the Qantas AGM to let shareholders know how Qantas continues to implement wage freezes on the workers that uphold the airline’s safety reputation as one of the best in the world. Every worker who comes to Australia deserves to be paid and treated fairly - and that includes fair access to superannuation. During the pandemic, workers made sacrifices so Qantas would survive — copping wage freezes and going months without secure work — as Qantas rorted over $2 billion from the public purse, millions were given to CEO salaries, and hard-working customers were price gouged. Qantas engineers at Melbourne and Brisbane have downed tools for 24 hours in the fight for a fair pay increase! As our National Secretary, Paul, and National President, Marina, explain, after 3.5 years of wage freezes, our members are fed up and fighting back. Hundreds of Qantas maintenance engineers are fed up! Today they took industrial action by downing tools for 24 hours at two of the biggest airports in Australia. Their voices deserve to be heard as the airline continues to ignore the elected bargaining committee. The Qantas Engineers’ Alliance made of the AMWU, AWU and ETU, are fighting for recognition of their skills. These highly skilled workers make sure the planes are safe to fly! No more delays! However, there's still a long way to go to in terms of understanding the level of exposure to silica dust that tunnelling workers have been exposed to. Researchers at the University of Sydney are conducting a survey on exposure to silica dust in Australian tunnelling. Your contribution to this survey will assist with wider research about the dangers of dust exposure in tunnelling projects. Your input will help save lives. The AWU is proud to support a successful Same Job, Same Pay application that will see labour hire workers' pay increase by 60%! Labour hire employees at the South32 Cannington Mine will now be paid the same rates set out in the Enterprise Agreement negotiated by the AWU - meaning wages will increase from a flat $45 per hour to $72! The Same Job, Same Pay application was lodged earlier this year, with labour hire company TP Human Capital not opposing the case. For years, large corporations have been using labour hire to bypass the wages and conditions negotiated by workers and their unions, cutting pay to boost their profits. It's unacceptable and the union movement is taking a stand. It's simple - if you perform the same job, with the same skills and experience as a direct employee, you deserve the same wages. We will never give up the fight for your rights at work!

The AWU is getting ready to bargain at Glencore! Recently, delegates underwent EBA training at our Mount Isa office to make sure they have the skills and knowledge to fight for a good outcome for our members. Delegates are the backbone of our union, and we're incredibly grateful for the hard work they do supporting workers and keeping the AWU strong. 👏
