Picture this: Your team’s burned out. The solution? Step challenges, mindfulness training, and maybe a lunch and learn for good measure. Problem solved, right? Good luck with that. Throwing perks at stressed out employees is like repeatedly shouting at your child to check the lost property bin for their school jumper as they head off to school—it feels efficient, but let’s be honest, it rarely works. The hard part? Heading to the school, going through the pile yourself, and making sure it’s found. Not efficient, but effective. Workplaces are ecosystems—emotional wellbeing, career growth, workloads, communications—they're all connected, to each other and to employee wellbeing and burnout. Effective solutions require emotional labour, experimentation, powerskill development, and consistent effort. It’s about aligning all the moving parts, even when it's tough - especially when it's tough. So, no more over-indexing at the individual. It’s not flashy, it probably wont win any awards, but it’s how you build something that works. Discover how fostering an employee ecosystem can create a thriving, resilient workforce. Can you believe how quickly 2024 is flying by? We're already in October, and last Thursday marked World Mental Health Day. World Mental Health Day is a powerful reminder of the importance of prioritizing mental wellbeing across the globe. This year’s theme, “It’s time to prioritize mental health in the workplace,” urges us to rethink how we support mental fitness where we work—and more importantly, how we lead. The role of managers and leaders in fostering mentally healthy workplaces cannot be overstated. Leadership isn't just about driving results; it's about building environments where people feel respected, included, supported, and valued. Here are four actionable ways leaders can strengthen workplace mental health—during Mental Health Awareness Month and beyond: 1. Align Your Actions with Your Intentions Good intentions aren’t enough—unintended consequences are still consequences. If your goal is to foster inclusivity, do your actions and decisions support this? Is your team experiencing what you intend to create? 2. Master the Art of Reset Your boundaries—or lack of them—send a message to your team. If you don’t take breaks or set limits, are you modeling healthy behavior? Consider whether your approach is serving you—and what it signals to others. 3. Focus on Growth, Not Just Metrics Is success defined by outcomes alone, or by progress and personal development along the way? Shifting the focus to improvement and learning makes giving and receiving feedback easier , learning from setbacks more likely and work more meaningful. 4. Foster a Speak-Up Culture Speaking up must feel safe and valuable. Are you framing conversations in a way that encourages input and feedback? Employees need to know their voices matter—not just to be heard, but to drive positive change. Supporting mental fitness isn't about offering wellness programs or resources. It's about embedding mental health into the fabric of the workplace culture. And this starts with good leaders who model the right behaviors, foster meaningful conversations, and create space for growth, connection, and balance. Mental fitness is not a one-month conversation; it’s an ongoing commitment. So as leaders, let’s ask ourselves—what small changes can we make today that will create a lasting, positive impact on our teams? #WorldMentalHealthDay #LeadingWELL #MentalHealthAtWork

Framing the Work: Putting BS into Psychological Safety Framing isn't just about clarifying objectives—it's about using BS to our advantage, and by that we mean behavioral science. When bringing people together around common goals, the way you frame the work is critical for fostering #psychologicalsafety. Framing helps create shared understanding and appreciation for challenges ahead. Interestingly, a bit of stress is necessary for meaningful work. But how do we frame it? Should we highlight the fact that 80% of the task is stress-free, or focus on the 20% that requires tension? Context here makes all the difference. The way we present information can dramatically shape people's responses and emotions. A common mistake in leadership is assuming that what needs to be done or the best approach is obvious to everyone. The reality is that each situation has unique focal points. The leader’s framing defines what those focal points should be and helps guide teams toward shared understanding, alignment, and ultimately, success. #LeadingWELL

How often do we think that changing reality is the only way to solve our problems? In truth, many of life’s challenges can be solved by simply shifting our perception. Instead of tirelessly pushing against the messy, complicated process of altering the external world, we can start by adjusting how we view things. Sometimes, a small shift in mindset can open up new solutions and perspectives, turning what once felt impossible into something manageable. The next time you face a problem, ask yourself: is it the situation that needs to change, or just the way I’m seeing it? #reframing #reappraisal #growthmindset

We often think that speeding up will help us get things done faster, but that's not always the case. There's a tendency to overestimate the time saved by rushing or doing things quickly, which is known as the "time-saving bias." For instance if we want to get to the destination quicker, we drive faster - right? Actually, it turns out that increasing your speed from 90kph to 100kph over a 10km journey saves approximately 40 seconds! In other words the faster you go, the less time you save, and the gains get smaller and smaller as your speed increases. This principle doesn’t just apply to driving—it applies to how we work as well. Rushing through your day, and multi-tasking might seem productive, but it actually shatters focus and efficiency. Slowing down and focusing on what matters leads to better outcomes and, like driving it is safer for ourselves and those around us. Sometimes, slowing down is the most efficient way to get where you want to go.

If you're not supporting your leaders, you're not supporting your employees. This research highlights that while flexible work arrangements offer the promise of better work-life balance, the real key to employee wellbeing is supporting leaders who guide their teams. When leaders are clear on expectations, collaborate on realistic goals, and recognize their teams effectively, employee wellbeing skyrockets—whether they're in a physical workspace or working remotely. Developing leadership skills isn’t enough; we must also ensure our leaders are equipped to manage their mental fitness and have the time for their own self-care. #EmployeeWellbeing #LeadingWELL #FutureOfWork

Your leader is more important to your wellbeing than your partner or your GP. The stats don't lie. But managers aren’t developed into leaders through a day of training. They require systemic measures. Blended leadership development. And what does that look like? Download our Leading WELL overview to find out more.
