Because every child needs a champion.

About us

Barnardos Australia is a leading non-government, non-denominational child protection charity in Australia. We are committed to supporting Australia’s most vulnerable children and their families with quality services. We believe all children and young people deserve caring families in which they can grow safely and fulfil their potential. We work together with children, young people and families to break the cycle of disadvantage, creating safe, nurturing and stable homes, connected to family and community. Our intensive family support programs combat family and domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, mental health, poverty and homelessness, to strengthen families and keep children safe at home. When this is not possible, we also provide safe homes for children through foster care and kinship care to give children a safe place to grow up and reach their potential. Since 1985 we have pioneered open adoption for non-Aboriginal children in NSW, giving children the permanency and security they need, for life.

I’m proud of my first campaign for the charity Barnardos Australia. They have been championing children for over 100 years, helping countless children and their families have a better life. Poverty is one of the biggest issues facing children today. 1 in 6 children in Australia are living in poverty. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine what poverty looks like in an affluent country and how it can affect kids. We wanted to show how a child can be affected by hardship through no fault of their own. Children shouldn’t have to worry about bills or where their next meal is coming from. Barnardos helps with transitional accommodation, pay bills and offer breakfast and homework clubs so poverty doesn't stop their potential. During Anti-Poverty week, if you come across a child doing it tough, please consider asking them what’s happened to them, not what’s wrong with them. Sometimes what kids have had to survive gets missed and they take on the perception that there’s something wrong with them. All children deserve access to support and to have their voices heard. #EndChildPoverty

Being a Churchill Fellow is, at its core, about discovering new ideas and capturing international perspectives 🌍 to address the challenges we face as a community, which for my project is ending the harm of domestic and family violence, particularly for the most vulnerable—children. One of the highlights of my visit to London was presenting our Barnardos Australia domestic and family violence research to the Domestic Abuse Commissioner for England and Wales, Nicole Jacobs, and her remarkable national team of policy, research, and practice experts. We had the opportunity to discuss their insights and explore connections between our work 🤝. Our two hours together truly embodied the essence of the Churchill Fellowship experience—sharing knowledge, learning from each other and bringing back innovative ideas 💡 to Australia to enhance our service responses for children experiencing violence at home, all of which will be reflected in my Churchill Fellow report. I was massively inspired by the Commissioner’s sharp focus on improving outcomes for babies, children, and young people affected by domestic abuse, a commitment shared by her leadership team and staff 💪. Their insights on monitoring and driving systemic change were both impressive and motivating, making the time fly by ⏳. We talked about: ►Working with children experiencing domestic abuse ►Effective joined up responses to violence against children and young people ►Evaluation models and outcomes for interventions ►Domestic homicide and suicide following domestic abuse ►Family Court proceedings involving children ►Integrating the voices and experiences of lived-experience experts to drive policy and practice reform. I’m particularly excited about the upcoming release of the Commissioner’s Children’s Policy report in January 📅. It will be accompanied by related reports, including a technical report mapping specialist interventions for children affected by domestic abuse and a report on the Commissioner’s excellent ‘Tell Nicole’ participatory framework for engaging children and young people 🗣️. A happy coincidence was visiting on the Commissioner’s birthday and being able to wish her a great day—symbolic of the joy I felt in meeting her and her team. The stimulating cross-national discussion and deep dive into their major workstreams and achievements will certainly shape my report findings. Many thanks to Commissioner Nicole Jacobs and her entire team for generously sharing their knowledge 🙏 Barnardos Australia Winston Churchill Trust (Australia) #ChampionsforChildren #domesticabuse #domesticviolence #churchillfellow #domesticabusecommissioner #changemaker
