When we talk about new approach methods (NAMs), we are talking about a range of techniques that can be used to test the effects of therapeutic goods. These could be in vitro models that use human or animal cells arranged in various levels of complexity (such as organoids or an organ-on-a-chip), or in silico models that use human data (such as digital twin studies). All of these models have different applications and are used in different ways to test the efficacy and toxicity of new therapeutic goods. Bellberry’s CEO, Kylie Sproston FTSE FMPP GAICD said that it’s time to turn promises into progress during her thought-provoking speech at the University of South Australia’s International Women’s Day (IWD) lunch yesterday. Using the IWD theme of #MarchForward, Kylie spoke about understanding diseases as they present in women (often quite differently from men) and the development of medicines and clinical evidence relating to women. It’s no surprise that we still have a way to go. Did you know that in the 1980s there was a landmark study to examine the impact of a daily dose of aspirin on the risk of heart attacks? The most surprising part of it was that all 22,071 trial participants were men! Kylie urged the women and men in the audience to use their influence to include and support women and girls both professionally and personally. Last December, Canteen Australia hosted the 6th Global AYA (Adolescents and Young Adults) Cancer Congress in Melbourne - the only global event dedicated to addressing the unique medical and psychosocial needs of AYAs with cancer. One of the most powerful aspects of the 2024 Congress was the meaningful involvement of AYA patient-advocates with lived experience of cancer. These delegates played key leadership roles - serving as chairs, presenters, and members of an AYA working group - ensuring that AYA voices directly shaped the Congress narrative. Through our participant engagement grant program, Bellberry was proud to support 18 AYAs with a lived experience of cancer from around the globe to attend the Congress. One delegate shared, "This is the first congress I’ve attended where survivors play such a huge role, and I think it is essential that the community we serve have a voice." This Congress demonstrated the importance that authentic patient involvement has in shaping better cancer care and research. #canteen #cancerresearch #participantengagement
