We create change to protect everyone’s mental health and improve the lives of individuals, families and communities affected by anxiety, depression and suicide. Mental health conditions don’t discriminate, and neither do we. Our programs and initiatives support people at all stages of life, wherever they live, work, study and play. Beyond Blue has four main goals that guide everything we do, and we use our community heart and business head to achieve these. Our goals help us measure the impact of our work, ensuring our programs and initiatives remain focused on achieving our vision and mission. Our goals are to: 1. reduce the impact of anxiety, depression and suicide by supporting people to protect their mental health and to recover when they are unwell 2. reduce people’s experiences of stigma and discrimination 3. improve people’s opportunities to get effective support and services at the right time 4. use best business practices to deliver integrated, evidence-based and cost-effective initiatives through our people and resources.

People in the LGBTIQ+ community experience disproportionately high rates of poor mental health, largely because of discrimination and isolation. So, its concerning that changes to Meta’s hateful conduct guidelines risks exposing more of gay and gender diverse people to harmful and abusive content. We must work to reduce the rates of poor mental health, psychological distress, and suicidal thoughts and behaviours and create safe spaces for people. If you need support, call the Beyond Blue Support Service 24/7 on 1300 22 4636, or chat to a counsellor online at https://bit.ly/40x69sV.

February 13 marks the anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations, who continue to experience trauma because of government policies of child removal and assimilation policies. The forced removal of children is a life altering and devastating trauma that continues to impact people’s ability to stay mentally well. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare found that First Nations people who had been removed from their families are 1.5 times as likely to experience poor mental health. At Beyond Blue, we acknowledge the devastation that past practices have had, and continue to have, on the lives of First Nations Peoples, and we are committed to supporting the social and emotional wellbeing of First Nations Peoples, their families and their communities across Australia. You can learn more about the impacts of Intergenerational Trauma and the work that Healing Foundation is doing to support healing with First Nations communities at bit.ly/4aWyAEg. Healing Foundation has also developed a number of resources on trauma and healing, including videos sharing the voices and experiences of members of the Stolen Generation: bit.ly/3COGx1G. To connect with a First Nations Crisis Supporter, call 13YARNYarn on 13 92 67. The Beyond Blue Support Service is also available for anyone, at anytime.
