Our 2023/24 Impact Review is here! 🎉 With a foreword from Sue Riddlestone OBE, it covers last year's incredible efforts from our fabulous team. Read it here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dTkGiu9C Our purpose – as a charity and social enterprise – is to work with partners to find and implement ways we humans can all live happy, healthy lives within the natural limits of our one planet, while also leaving half the Earth for the rest of nature to thrive. Together, we create inspiring solutions for the ways in which we do business, how we make the products we all buy, and how we plan and build the places where we live and work. Last year we: 🏘️ led an industry campaign backed by more than 250 organisations to set a greater standard for UK homes 💼 supported 33 organisations to develop and deliver their sustainability strategies, sustainable product guidelines, carbon accounting, and net-zero roadmaps. These businesses collectively employ over 290,000 people, with a combined total turnover of over £23bn. 🏗️ worked with 13 developers and housebuilders on sustainability strategies for housing-led, mixed-use development. Collectively these could deliver over 5,000 sustainable homes, as well as over 100,000m2 of sustainable commercial or community space. 🏛️ supported 10 local authorities in their planning and policy work. Over the next decade, our work will help deliver approximately 9,000 sustainable homes per year as part of local authority growth plans. 🌍 welcomed four new One Planet Living® Leaders, taking the total to 32 gold-standard projects from around the world Thanks to all our change-making clients and partners. 6 benefits of scope 3 supplier engagement (and how our expert team does it) 🤝 Scope 3 supplier engagement is actively collaborating with your suppliers to improve sustainability, ethical practices, and overall performance within your supply chain. 🪴 By engaging with your suppliers, you can address various issues such as reducing carbon emissions, promoting responsible sourcing, and enhancing labour standards. 🌳 (Oh - if you don't yet know your scope 3 from your scopes 1 and 2 - check out the handy pic at the back of the slides below) If you didn't know already: your supply chain is a BIIIIIG deal. 🦖 Scope 3 emissions are where most of your carbon footprint sits. The supply chain usually accounts for around 75% of a company’s carbon footprint and can also contribute significantly towards an organisation’s nature impacts. 🦋 So, meeting net-zero targets means achieving significant reductions throughout your supply chain - you simply can’t get there without doing it. 📉🌍 Learn more about our unique approach to supply chain engagement here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dvnK-aj7 (or feel free to drop Stephanie Schlipper a message) 👋 #Scope3 #NetZero #SustainableBusiness #SupplyChain #CorporateSustainability

We are thrilled to share our work on the Kingsley Hall refurbishment project! 🏛️🌱 We teamed up with an amazing design team to breathe new life into this historic building for 1625 Independent People, a charity supporting young people facing homelessness, all thanks to The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Our role was to develop a sustainable vision and strategy for Kingsley Hall, a Grade II* listed building in Bristol. Using our #OnePlanetLiving🌍 framework, we collaborated with the brilliant team at 1625 Independent People to create a plan aligned with its mission and the local community's needs. It was so inspiring to work directly with the young people supported by 1625 to co-create the final strategy. Learn more about the project here 👉 https://lnkd.in/ebPHBTck If you're in Bristol / the South West then please check out (and support!) 1625 Independent People's Sleep Out fundraising event in November 🌙💤👉 https://lnkd.in/dz5aebwR Huge shout-out to our small but mighty gang of Sustainable Places superstars: Lewis Knight, Jo Mortensen, James Sheldon, Marina Goodyear, Nathan Hucks, Jess Daly, Nina Wallace (BA, MSc), Alex McCann, Thomas Russell 💚 and the awesome design team of PHD Building Advisory Limited, Clarkebond, Box Twenty Consulting Engineers, Gleeds and Childs Sulzmann Architects. #sustainability #regenerativedevelopment #socialimpact #architecture #engineering #bristol #charity #youth #homelessness

We’re proud to announce our role as Project Managers for the Kingsley Hall Refurbishment Project with 1625 Independent People, which was recently submitted for planning. 1625ip supports those already homeless or at risk of homelessness and provides a range of specialist support to help young people secure education, employment and training. This huge milestone follows years of engagement and development and will provide accommodation, support and training for young people in Bristol. Located in Bristol’s historic Old Market Conservation Area, Kingsley Hall is set to become a vibrant community hub. The heritage site dates back to 18th century and will be transformed into a welcoming space where young people can overcome isolation, develop skills, and rebuild their lives.   At PHD Building Advisory, we specialise in heritage restoration. "Meeting housing demands should not come at the expense of our natural ecosystems. In this critical moment, we must advocate for stronger, clearer policies within the NPPF that make net-zero homes the standard across the UK." - Lewis Knight's initial thoughts on the latest NPPF consultation 👇👇👇

It's taken me a few days to pick through the latest NPPF consultation. It makes for interesting reading. I've tried to summarise my thoughts below on some of the key implications, and Bioregional will be putting out a longer blog piece soon. Let me know your thoughts too. The UK government's proposed revisions to the NPPF for 2024 reflect a complex balancing act between addressing housing needs, promoting economic growth, and preserving the environment, particularly through. what will likely be controvsial changes to Green Belt policies. However, as housing targets increase and pressure on Local Planning Authorities to release land intensifies, one thing is clear: the need for net-zero homes is more crucial than ever. The consultation’s push for higher housing targets and the restoration of the five-year housing land supply requirement signals the government’s clear commitment to boosting housing delivery (in line with their manifesto to build 1.5 million homes). But without a clear mandate for net-zero standards, these efforts could come at a significant environmental cost. The introduction of the "Grey Belt" concept and changes to Green Belt policies, which make it easier to develop on previously protected land, further heighten the urgency to ensure all new homes are built to net-zero specifications. As LPAs are pressured to meet these increased targets, particularly in areas like the Home Counties and urban fringes, it's imperative that sustainable development is non-negotiable, both in terms of standard of the housing, but also the spatial implications of this growth (no more dormantary and car dependent developments). Every new home built must contribute to our legally mandated net-zero goals, aligning with the broader need for climate resilience. In this critical moment, we must advocate for stronger, clearer policies within the NPPF that make net-zero homes the standard across the UK. Meeting housing demands should not come at the expense of our natural ecosystems. Instead, let’s ensure that every new home is a step towards a sustainable, resilient future. #NetZero #SustainableDevelopment #NPPF #ClimateAction #GreenBelt Marina Goodyear Alex McCann Sue Riddlestone OBE Good Homes Alliance Amy Powell Paul Slater

Everyone has a right to staying cool in a heating world. Air conditioning uses 7% global electricity, causes 3% greenhouse gas emissions and releases harmful, global warming refrigerant gases. In our heating world, especially in parts of the world least responsible for historic emissions, demand for AC is set to triple by 2050. Designing cities and buildings for heat, for example by deploying nature based solutions, and low cost (subsidised), energy efficient cooling solutions can make a significant difference to mitigating this energy demand and keep everyone, everywhere cool. https://lnkd.in/ej6QQvDV
