BAL ratings are more than just a technical classification - they're a vital safety measure that assesses a building's potential exposure to bushfire conditions. From ember attack to radiant heat and direct flame contact, these ratings determine the necessary construction measures to protect properties in high-risk areas. Early assessment is crucial, materials selection matters and proper installation and compliance with Australian standards is vital for safety and insurance eligibility in bushfire-prone areas. When designing his family's home in Melbourne's Albert Park, Architect and Certified Passive House Designer Niall O Healaithe wanted to build a maritime inspired ‘ark’ that would guard against the worst extremes of climate as it changes. Working with a confined space between neighbouring properties, he needed prefabricated materials that could not only be easily lifted into place, but also meet stringent passive house and fire safety regulations. Drawing inspiration from historic shipbuilding techniques, Niall paired traditional post and beam structural framing with Bondor’s Equitilt FlameGuard® insulated panels. The Bondor panels seamlessly integrated with the timber structure to create an airtight and insulated building envelope. The completed house achieves an eight-star energy rating and is certified Passive House Plus, requiring less than 15 kWh/m²/yr for heating/cooling.
