Today Mark Bailey MP visited Braille House to announce a $2.7 million funding commitment by the Miles Labor Government to support the construction of a new, fully accessible Braille House facility at our Annerley site. This new three-storey building will feature a library, office spaces, and a rooftop terrace, enhancing our ability to serve the blind and low vision community in Queensland. Mark Bailey MP, Member for Miller, has been a staunch advocate for this project and long-time supporter of Braille House. If re-elected, the Miles Labor Government will call on the Federal Government to match this contribution. Thank you for your support in helping us continue our mission to promote literacy and empower people of all ages who are blind or have low vision through alternative formats. #BrailleHouse #LowVision #DisabilitySupport #InclusiveCommunities #QLD

Today is #WorldSightDay, and this year’s theme is “Love Your Eyes.” 💖👀 At Braille House, we believe that everyone — no matter their level of vision — deserves access to the joy and empowerment of literacy. 📚 This year’s focus is on the importance of eye care for young people, inspiring children everywhere to love their eyes and take care of them. With vision loss or blindness affecting over 1 billion people worldwide, it’s essential to prioritize healthy vision from a young age. 🌍 We’re proud to support children and young adults with vision impairments by providing access to books, literacy resources, and braille learning materials that help open up new worlds and possibilities. 📖💡 Let’s work together to ensure a brighter, more inclusive future where every child has the chance to embrace learning, regardless of their vision. 💙 #LoveYourEyes #EyeCare #BrailleLiteracy

It’s a big day at Braille House as we celebrate 125 years of our Library empowering those who are blind or have low vision. This morning, we enjoyed hosting the ABC for live crosses back to their studio, kicking off a day filled with milestones and community spirit. We're not only marking the 125th anniversary of the Braille House Library but also gearing up for the Karma Keg event this afternoon, in collaboration with the Queensland Hotels Association, Stone & Wood Brewery and iconic Brisbane pubs: The Caxton Hotel, The Normanby Hotel, and The Paddo Tavern. A heartfelt thank you to the Queensland Hotels Association, Stone & Wood Brewery and these wonderful local pubs for their incredible support. Today's events, from the morning's live broadcast to the afternoon tea with the Governor at Government House, and culminating in the Karma Keg event, are a true testament to the enduring impact and importance of our work. Karma Keg is a great example of the power of unity and generosity. Thanks to Stone & Wood's beer donation and the hospitality of these iconic Brisbane pubs, Braille House receives more funds to enable us to continue to make a significant impact. To our business community: this event underscores the diverse ways we can back each other up. Whether you're with us at Karma Keg, contributing donations, leveraging our business services, or volunteering, your support is always appreciated. Join us in celebrating this significant milestone of 125 years of literacy and empowerment. And for those of you joining us at Karma Keg to celebrate, please remember to do so responsibly. If you're joining the festivities, consider arranging a safe way home. #SupportBrailleHouse #CommunityLove #MakeADifference #125YearsOfBrailleLibrary Here's to a day of reflection, celebration, and responsible enjoyment. #DrinkResponsibly #StaySafe

We’re celebrating World Braille Day by highlighting the Queensland Braille Writing Association also known as Braille House. For over 126 years, they’ve built a significant and unique collection of Braille and tactile materials. Their collection also includes writing machines and other tools. The Association is one of the 2023 Community Heritage Grant recipients. They’ll bring in a qualified conservator with this grant. This will help them continue to preserve the history of the Australian blind and visually impaired community.

Sunday, 3rd December was International Day of People with Disabilities, and we are happy to share a fantastic highlight with our community. Our General Manager, Richard Barker, had the honour of joining long-time Braille House supporter Santiago Velasquez at a morning tea to support the International Day of People with Disability, held at Parliament House, Canberra. This event was a powerful showcase of diversity in action, supported by inspiring words from the Honourable Bill Shorten, Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme and Minister for Government Services, along with the Honourable Amanda Rishworth, Minister for Social Services. We’re looking forward to the continued success of our ambassadors and the positive influence of our network in Australia and beyond. Please join us in spreading the word and continuing to make a difference together! #InternationalDayofPeoplewithDisabilities #DiversityInAction #BrailleHouse #MakingADifference #SantiagoVelasquez #NDIS #ParliamentHouse #HonourableBillShorten #HonourableAmandaRishworth
