About us

Since 2005, Brand X has been making space for artists by re-purposing underutilised space in Sydney. We are a non-profit arts organisation run by Artists for Artists who transform empty spaces into cultural places. We do this so artists can contribute, flourish and be sustainable in the community for the advancement of a healthy, connected and creative society. In 2022 we are opening our new CBD space with City of Sydney: City of Sydney Creative Studios.

  • A recent report by the Committee for Sydney thinktank has detailed a shocking drop in space occupied by Creative Artists, Writers, Musicians and Performers, close to 30% in the decade from 2012. "Creativity is being priced out of Sydney, due to chronic housing unaffordability, the cost of living and, importantly, the cost of rehearsal spaces, art studios, recording facilities and other creative workspace." The City of Sydney Creative Studios (CoSCS), operated by Brand X, stands as a beacon of hope against this discouraging cultural and economic backdrop. Facilitated by artists, for artists, CoSCS offers significant subsidised rates and opportunities to encourage the creation and output of creative work. We feel very proud of the work we do for independent artists as we fight back against these declining and challenging trends. Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/eVgYjzMc

PETITE SUITE ARTIST CALL OUT! Seven Artists, Seven Rooms, Seven Minutes! Brand X is calling for applications from artists with experience in creating site-responsive contemporary performance to apply for the 2024 season of Petite Suite hosted by Ace Hotel, Sydney. Seven artists sleep, dream and reimagine Ace Hotel: Sydney’s premier design-centric hotel in Surry Hills. Small rooms meet big ideas – each artist (or group) gets a suite to creatively turndown, tuck-in and redefine the room of the hotel through a contemporary performance lens. Artists will sleep onsite in our mini(bar) residency to create seven-minute experiences for intimate audiences over 3 nights. The program includes; accommodation onsite at Ace Hotel, Sydney, dinners on performance nights,  $1700 artist fee,  $500 production stipend, and Brand X event support The structure of the program is fluid, allowing for the creation of diverse, dynamic works which may respond to the hotel, its history, its surroundings or something altogether new. This opportunity is appropriate for contemporary artists working in theatre, spoken word, music, dance, comedy, cabaret, physical theatre, circus, sound, performance art, interactive multimedia or multi-art forms. So what are you waiting for? We had a blast last night at the 2024 Sydney Business Awards held at Town Hall! Brand X were nominated in the category for Outstanding Community Organisation and although we didn’t bring home the trophy, rumours have it that we took home first place for best dressed and best on the dfloor. Congratulations to all the nominees and winners! Especially Brand X board member Jodie Wainwright at Milk Crate Theatre for Outstanding Business Leader.
