Stu Schonell, CEO from Advocacy WA led an informative session last night in equipping Boards and Management Committees with a range of areas to consider when inviting those living with a disability to join them. After sharing a staggering statistic of 1 in 5 people live with a disability that impacts day to day functioning, the question that resonated with many in the room was ‘Are you Disability Aware’. It was a timely reminder to note that many people living with a disability may choose not to disclose this to their workplace. We need to know it is their choice and they are in complete control of this decision. What can we do to be more inclusive in our recruitment of Board and Committee Members? 🔶 Understand the two models of disability – Medical and Social 🔶 Being disability aware which includes unconscious bias 🔶 What level of understanding do you have in communicating with people living with a disability e.g. language in your recruitment 🔶 Reflecting on why we don’t have those living with disabilities on our boards 🔶 Why does unconscious bias matter? You might be missing out on a wealth of talent; you might not be supporting your staff the best that you can 🔶 Language and Terminology – how do we define people living with a disability and looking at best practice for our language use There is so many informative areas to consider and it was wonderful to hear that Stu is happy run another of these workshops in the New Year. Many checklists were shared, including a comprehensive one on website accessibility: https://lnkd.in/g4PyePep For further details if you would like to know more information, please contact admin@advocacywa.org.au

It was great to have Cis Narkle and Kim Narkle to Chamber House on October 15th as part of our Lunch & Learn series. This month’s topic was on Attracting and Retaining Aboriginal Employees. The 16 employers from across our business community listened to two different stories which set the scene in improving the steps in retention and supporting cultural awareness and wellbeing in the workplace. Some key takeaways included: - Feeling comfortable at work – create a supportive workplace for Aboriginal people so they feel culturally safe - Induction – A good introduction is important – first impressions are critical, explanations of the way you run your organisation are very important - Managing Leave – Establish a flexible and family friendly environment, talking through expectations and include ‘cultural’ or ‘ceremonial’ leave - Culturally awareness training to be ongoing – keep the conversations alive - Empowerment – establish opportunities for development and training when needed, providing clear instructions. Never assume literacy is the same for everyone. - Barriers – consider and discuss how you as an organisation might assist and remember there are services to assist. - Mentoring – to settle in it is advisable to have someone as a mentor for the first 6-12 months - Employment Strategy – develop an Aboriginal recruitment strategy to ensure it is culturally appropriate eg. CV’s may not answer all the criteria, you may need to talk further into skills when interviewing - RAP – only do if it is going to be a living document not just ticking a box! Cis and Kim are available for businesses to reach out if they need assistance. Kim’s email is kim.narkle@srtafe.wa.edu.au and Cis’s email is Cis.Narkle@srtafe.wa.edu.au

Small Business does matter! Today is Small Business Day, celebrated across Western Australia. Yesterday we held a casual morning tea for small businesses in our community, to acknowledge and celebrate them. As many will know who have owned and operated businesses, it is much more than passion and purpose. It takes a resilience and determination to meet customer needs. Today, we are reminded to support locally owned businesses whenever possible. They are often the ones backing our local sports clubs and assisting with fundraising efforts; they underpin the liveability of our region and without them we will not have the vibrancy we all expect. As of June 30, 2023, the number of small businesses is as follows:* - City of Bunbury: 2,849 - Shire of Harvey: 1,638 - Shire of Dardanup: 857 - Shire of Capel: 1,144 In total, the South West boasts 16,236 small businesses, and we say thank you! *as at 30 June, 2023.
