This month, we hosted the Brisbane launch event for Product Aware – an initiative of the Materials Working Group from Australian Architects Declare (AAD). The event was part of a rollout that saw similar events hosted in Sydney and Melbourne and online across June and July 2024.   Each launch event featured a demonstration of the Product Aware platform and a panel discussion between members of contributing practices: Bates Smart, BVN, Cox Architecture, and Susty Spec.   Read more about Product Aware and the event here: https://lnkd.in/gG25NsR2

The Australian Institute of Architects recently announced its 2024 National Awards shortlist and BVN has two projects selected among 63 that ‘offer a glimpse into the groundbreaking projects redefining and reshaping the contemporary built environment’. St Patrick's College, Strathfield’s Scientia Building is shortlisted in the Educational Architecture category. The University of Queensland UQ Brisbane City (with Architectus Conrad Gargett) is shortlisted in the Heritage Architecture category. The communication, cooperation and commitment between clients, collaborators, consultants and our teams makes each of these projects greater than the sum of their parts.    Winners will be announced at the AIA National Architecture Awards ceremony held at the Adelaide Convention Centre on Thursday 7 November. As expressions of collective creativity, design excellence and innovation on a global stage, three BVN projects have been announced on the World Architecture Festival (WAF) shortlist. St Patrick’s College Scientia Building – is shortlisted in the Completed Buildings – Schools category.  Prince of Wales Hospital Acute Services Building is shortlisted in the Completed Buildings – Health category. UQ Brisbane City is shortlisted in the Inside – Education category. BVN will present the shortlisted projects at the World Architecture Festival, 6-8 November 2024, at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. The future of learning looks bright, especially when viewed from the ‘versatile verandahs’ of St Patrick's College, Strathfield’s Scientia Building that has been honoured with the William E Kemp Award for Educational Architecture at the Australian Institute of Architects NSW Chapter Awards held on Friday 28 June 2024.   “As well as providing a new front door to the historic campus, the Scientia Building celebrates student-centred learning environments, the importance of community and the site’s natural and physical features,” said co-CEO and Principal Ali Bounds on accepting the award.   Scientia takes an outside-in approach to reimagining education opportunities where open air spaces blur the line between formal and informal learning and teaching. BVN has been commended for advancing a ‘design ethos that prioritises flexibility and adaptability, catering to diverse educational needs and future uses’. “Emphasising the importance of outdoor education, the Scientia Building features numerous outdoor learning areas, further enriching the educational experience. A unified facade treatment with folded sunshading elements enhances the building's aesthetics and maximises transparency. Triple win for UQ Brisbane City.   "We are thrilled UQ Brisbane City has been recognised by the Australian Institute of Architects and our peers at the State level — not only in one category, but a trifecta!" said Associate Amanda Wells-Peris on collecting a trio of awards for University of Queensland Brisbane City at the AIA QLD Awards held Friday 21 June.   Amongst a ‘significant collection of educational facilities’, the awards’ jury recognised BVN’s UQ Brisbane City with the Educational Architecture Award and a commendation for Interior Architecture. The icing on the cake was also receiving the Don Roderick Award for Heritage (in collaboration with Architectus Conrad Gargett).   UQ Brisbane City converts a historic bank and its commercial annex into new settings for postgraduate students within the Architecture and Business Schools, alongside a centre for UQ alumni. This learning and collegiate hub is brimming with stories of restoration and sensitive adaptation that honour heritage and prioritise connection – between academics, graduates, history and the city.   “Playing a part in reimagining such a significant civic building in Brisbane made this a once-in-a-lifetime project. Until recently, the building was privatised and its spaces were concealed.
