“As an investor, you have to think about epochs,” said co-founder and CEO Kristi Knaack Riordan, making the case for investing in the deeply complex real-world solutions that Harvest B and many of our Alberts Impact Ventures portfolio companies are developing. "If you’re too afraid to jump in, take the risks that are associated with hardware … You’re going to miss the epoch and miss the opportunity for return.” This was part of the critical debate during 'Hardware vs. Software - Who is winning the fight for climate change?', one of our panels at yesrerday’s SXSW Sydney conference, bringing together just some of our brightest climate-focussed founders tackling the planet's most pressing problems through their hardware startups. The ongoing debate around PFAS contamination continues, as Australia's water experts explore the complexities of drinking water guidelines and remediation efforts. A recent study by the University of Sydney highlights the need for stronger regulations, ensuring that consumers don’t bear the financial burden of fixing this environmental issue. At Bygen, we are committed to providing sustainable solutions for contamination challenges, including PFAS removal. Our innovative, cost-effective, low-temperature sustainable activated carbon products offer an environmentally friendly option for PFAS adsorption, contributing to cleaner water and a healthier environment. As we await the NHMRC's review of the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, we’re hopeful that Australia will continue leading with science-based, health-focused regulations. Let’s keep the conversation going on how we can better protect our communities and our planet. Credit to the Australian Water Association and author Cecilia Harris.

At Bygen, we're leveraging the power of activated carbon to make wastewater treatment more sustainable. Whether it's industrial effluents or sewage treatment, our activated carbon production technology plays a crucial role in making sustainable activated carbon and more sustainably ensuring that harmful substances are effectively removed before water is discharged or reused. ·  Industrial Effluents: Our activated charcoal is used to treat industrial wastewater, removing organic pollutants, heavy metals, and toxic substances. This not only helps industries meet environmental standards but also contributes to cleaner and safer water systems. · Sewage Treatment: In sewage treatment plants, our activated charcoal aids in the removal of dissolved organic matter and residual chemicals during secondary treatment, ensuring that treated water is safe for release back into the environment. Bygen's innovative approach not only enhances the effectiveness of wastewater treatment but also supports a more sustainable future. Together, we can protect our water resources and reduce environmental impact.

It's great to see the first containers unloaded at our site with our partner. These will shortly be installed and commissioned, enabling the production of approximately 2,000 tonnes per year of sustainable activated carbon from locally sourced feedstocks. The activated carbon produced from this site is particularly suited to drinking water and wastewater treatment, along with PFAS remediation. With two more trains due next year, this site will become a local hub for activated carbon manufacturing. This marks a significant step forward in our mission to enable low-cost and sustainable activated carbon production, and we can’t wait to see the impact this facility will have on the future of clean water and sustainability.
