About us

The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) was established by international convention in 1982 with the objective of conserving Antarctic marine life. CCAMLR is an international commission with 25 Members, and a further 11 countries have acceded to the Convention. Based on the best available scientific information, the Commission agrees a set of conservation measures that determine the use of marine living resources in the Antarctic. CCAMLR practises an ecosystem-based management approach. This does not exclude harvesting as long as such harvesting is carried out in a sustainable manner and takes account of the effects of fishing on other components of the ecosystem.

🐟 Thailand's successful application to become a Cooperating Non-Contracting Party to CCAMLR reflects its dedication to sustainable fisheries management and commitment to Antarctic conservation.   From May 1-3 2024, CCAMLR’s Fisheries Monitoring and Compliance Team had the privilege of conducting a comprehensive Dissostichus spp. Catch Documentation Scheme workshop for Thailand's Department of Fisheries in Bangkok. We were thrilled to have over 30 participants  join us both in person and online, with 12 dedicated officers responsible for monitoring seafood trade in Thailand completing the full course.   A big thank you to everyone involved for making this workshop a success. We look forward to continuing our collaboration and shared efforts towards responsible fishing practices.

🌍🐟 Today is the International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. 🐟 CCAMLR Conservation Measures safeguard against the risk of illegal, unauthorised fishing undermining Antarctic marine conservation. Close international cooperation between CCAMLR Parties, and with international law enforcement agencies and regional fisheries organisations, ensures protection against IUU fishing. CCAMLR's catch documentation scheme, seen below, confirms the origin, weight, harvest and movement of toothfish - to ensure illegal catch has no legitimate point of sale. We were delighted to host Tembisa Sineka, Director of Integrated Projects and International Coordination in the South African National Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment at the CCAMLR Secretariat last week. As the international Commission established to conserve Antarctic marine living resources, CCAMLR brings together countries from around the globe committed to the conservation and rational use of Antarctic marine living resources and ensuring that fishing is conducted in a sustainable manner. South Africa has been a Member of the Commission since its inception in 1982. Our colleagues were excited to collaborate with Tembisa, covering topics such as management of the krill and toothfish fisheries, the development of Marine Protected Areas, and compliance with CCAMLR regulations.
