"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." - Genevieve Mora It's estimated that over 103,000 people in Aotearoa struggle with eating disorders. A couple of months ago, I watched a discussion facilitated by the Centre for Integrative Health that highlighted the serious shortcomings in eating disorder assessments. Unfortunately, these assessments can often become barriers for those seeking support and perpetuate the stigma and misunderstandings surrounding eating disorders. In light of Mental Health Awareness Week, I wanted to share a piece from Voices of Hope about practical tips and hopes for recovering from an eating disorder. Notably, the role of the pie chart and the use of anger. Consider: How can you, in your conversations, help spread hope? #mentalhealthawareness #MHAW #itsnotweaktospeak #voicesofhope https://lnkd.in/gvQFE3wJ

Over 1.1 million Australians are living with an eating disorder. Less than a third of those receive treatment or support. Creating an environment where accessing treatment is simple, compassionate and diligent, is a core value of Centre for Integrative Health. It makes me proud to represent my values in congruence with my workplace. Remember, either potentially for yourself or for your loved one(s), there is support out there ❤️

Yesterday, Eating Disorders Families Australia (EDFA) attended the HealthED Australia’s Annual Women's and Children's Health Update in Brisbane. We had a joint table with the Centre for Integrative Health (CFIH) and met with 64 GPs, nurses, and other health professionals, to talk about how we can help them in their work by providing support for carers and families of those with an eating disorder while their loved ones are in treatment. As part of a collaboration between EDFA, CFIH and ANZAED, CFIH director Dr Kiera Buchanan presented to a room of 1,400 General Practitioners on the topic of Binge Eating Disorder. Founder | Psychology, Mental Health, Eating Disorders

I had the immense pleasure and privilege of presenting to a room of 1,400 General Practitioners on the topic of Binge Eating Disorder at today’s Healthed Australia annual conference. Here’s a summary of the 8 takeaway points that were delivered for the accurate identification and effective treatment; 1) Use language that reflects the normal and healthy distribution of weight/shape (ie., “average BMI”, “higher weight”) and which avoids pathologising bodies. 2) Remember that you can’t ’see’ an eating disorder; refrain from using weight/shape as an indicator of eating disorder risk and instead, utilise unbiased, objective data. 3) There are no evidence-based, long-term weight-loss interventions. However, the efficacious treatment for eating disorder treatment does exist. 4) Dieting and weight loss are the strongest predictors (and therefore, the most sensitive flags) of eating disorder vulnerability. 5) Weight loss is NEVER a target of binge-eating disorder treatment. 6) Binge eating is a commonly-occurring response following episodes of dietary restriction and restraint, therefore, it is important to rule out Bulimia Nervosa and Anorexia Nervosa before diagnosing Binge Eating Disorder. 7) Health and happiness can be improved in the absence of weight loss. 8) All people with an eating disorder, irrespective of body size or eating disorder diagnosis, are at risk of medical instability and psychiatric compromise - making the ongoing medical monitoring of all individuals with an eating disorder a necessary and important part of treatment.
