Ms Anguara Khatun from Program 1 led by Prof Eugeni Roura in Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) has completed her first experimental feeding trial where she tested nine essential #aminoacids in #soyabean meal free, low #crudeprotein #broiler chicken #diet. An amino acid preference was noted from bird feed intake while other data analysis is ongoing. She has submitted the outcome of the first experiment to #APSS2025 and shared it at the recent Consortium Industry Forum. Now she is preparing for the second experiment and #animalethics application. She is planning to start her second feeding trail to test both essential and non-essential amino acids in low crude protein broiler diet. This project will help to improve the efficiency of broiler chickens, reduce the feed cost and increase the #sustainability of broiler production in Australia. About us
Big in scale and potential impact, the AgriFutures Chicken Meat Consortium - Nutrition, Gut Health and Environment represents an ambitious new direction for poultry research in Australia and around the world. Jointly funded by AgriFutures Australia and led by The University of Queensland, the project also involves the University of Sydney, Massey University, Central Queensland University and the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, and nine top international universities and six global industry leaders in the poultry industry including Aviagen, DSM, Lallemond, Lucta, and Metex Noovistago, are heavily involved in the project. The project with 48 scientists signed on, eager to collaborate and bring their unique expertise, skills, and backgrounds together will train 10 PhD students, foster 19 early-mid career researchers (EMCRs), organise four satellite symposia with international collaborators, sponsor 10 industry placement programs for students and EMCRs, and add over 20 new scientific publications that will boost current understanding of chicken nutrition. By harnessing the ambition of AgriFutures and the broader Australian poultry industry, the project has a unique opportunity to deliver solutions that drive further production, environment, and animal welfare outcomes for Australia’s most popular meat, outlined in the AgriFutures Chicken Meat Program RD&E Plan (2022-2027).

Two weeks ago 8-9th Oct, the Consortium manager Dr Stanley Chen was invited to meet with the members of World Poultry Science Association (#WPSA) New Zealand Branch and present the Consortium development and progress to date at the AGM meeting during its annual #poultry #industry conference in #Tauranga #NewZealand. During the conference, Stanley not only presented his research in #poultryprocessing and #Campylobacter, met with the WPSA NZ members, but also discussed the #challenges faced by the chicken meat industry with several industry representatives and contract growers in NZ. The NZ branch members were delighted to learn the support and #motivation of AgriFutures Australia to the sector, expressed strong interest in the Consortium research, and acknowledged the #dedication of bringing research #capabilities together across the #academic and industry sectors to achieve a common #goal. They were incredibly impressed by the complementary research programs of the Consortium by pulling the capabilities together, how much the Consortium team has delivered over just a year of research operation, the level of #engagement with industry, and the breadth of research activities that is the unparallel in the #chickenmeat research. The Consortium team appreciates the support and interest from the WPSA NZ branch and would love to continue the conversation and #partnership to help the #sustainability progression for both Australia and New Zealand chicken meat supply. What a fun and inspiring day! 🎉 🎊 🐔 Last Friday 18th Oct, the team of AgriFutures Australia Chicken Nutrition, Gut Health and Environment Consortium hosted its first #Industry #Forum at the St Lucia campus of The University of Queensland. More than 40 people from industry partners, levy payers, and #research providers attended the event for a day of fruitful discussion and interaction in person and online. The Forum focused on providing updates of the Consortium research activities exclusively to the involved partners. A series of 15 research presentations by all 14 #PhD students and 1 #postdoc showcased the tremendous output and progress the Consortium team has achieved for less than 1.5 year of the research operation. Positive feedback has been received from all participating partners from the #poultry industry, levy payers, and the AgriFutures management and its #chicken #meat advisory panel members, marking the success of the event. The Consortium team would like to acknowledge the support of the chicken meat industry, levy payers, AgriFutures Australia and Australian Chicken Meat Federation (ACMF) by joining the event, the contribution of all students, post-doc, research officers and program leaders presented their work, and the organisation of the event by Ms Felicity McIntosh, Dr Stanley Chen, and Prof Eugeni Roura.
