The Newborn Emergency Transport Service (NETS) WA has successfully transported the first baby via the Royal Flying Doctor Service WA (RFDS) Heli-Med Service EC145 helicopter, which touched down on Monday at Perth Children’s Hospital. Thanks to new neonatal cot capability on board, made possible thanks to funding Royal Flying Doctor Service (WA) secured from Telethon7, our NETS team is now able to transfer babies less than a month old via helicopter. With special equipment that provides warmth and the necessary support for newborn and preterm infants, the cots allow faster movement between medical facilities. NETS WA Medical Director Dr Jonathan Davis said the first transfer was an exciting milestone. “Our partnership with Royal Flying Doctor Service WA is invaluable in ensuring newborn babies across Western Australia have access to specialised neonatal care quickly and safely when they need it most. “We anticipate this new helicopter capability will dramatically reduce transfer times for countless babies each year.”

Wishing everyone a joyous and prosperous Lunar New Year from the Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS)! As we welcome the Year of the Snake, it’s a wonderful time to celebrate family, cultural traditions, and the spirit of renewal. Lunar New Year is a time for reflection, community, and growth and at CAHS this is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of health, wellbeing, and support for all families. Lunar New Year is celebrated by many cultures, including Chinese, Malay, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, and Tibetan communities. For those of Chinese ancestry, it is the most important annual festival, celebrated for over 1,000 years. In 2025, the Year of the Snake symbolises wisdom, transformation, and new opportunities for personal growth. As Amelia Hu, co-chair of our Multicultural Access and Inclusion Advisory Group, says: “Lunar New Year is a time for reflection, renewal, and celebration, where we embrace our diverse cultures and come together in unity and joy.” “In our family, we gather for a reunion meal with traditional dishes like noodles and steamboat to symbolise long life, abundance and good beginnings.” At CAHS, we are proud to support and celebrate the diversity of our community and encourage all families to embrace this joyful time with health and wellbeing in mind. Xin Nian Kuai Le! (新年快乐) – Wishing you a Happy New Year!

12-year-old Clare Nicholson’s day at Adventure World turned painful after she suffered severe sunburn, leaving her with blisters so large she needed hospital treatment. Clare’s experience highlights a growing trend at Perth Children’s Hospital, where severe sunburn cases are on the rise. Clinical Nurse Consultant Tania McWilliams, who has worked in burns for 28 years, shares an important message: “Sunburn is a preventable injury.” Parents, please remember: • Apply sunscreen regularly and after swimming. • Dress kids in long-sleeved rash vests, hats, and sunglasses. • Avoid outdoor activities when UV levels are high. It’s also important to be aware of social media trends promoting tanning, which can lead to lasting skin damage. Let’s do our best to help kids stay safe and healthy in the sun.
