🐂 🌿 Pasture Quality, Not Just Biomass, Drives Cattle Performance 🐂🌱 New research on Brahman heifers grazing northern Australian pastures confirms a critical insight: pasture quality—not just biomass—is the key driver of liveweight gain. 📊 Key Findings from the Study: ✅ Liveweight gain was 3x higher in the wet season due to better-quality pasture. ✅ Cattle actively select more digestible forage, even in high-biomass paddocks. ✅ Movement patterns shift in the dry season—heifers traveled 8-12 km/day searching for better feed. ✅ Overgrazing reduces legume content, which affects long-term pasture nutrition. ✅ The best-performing cattle weren’t eating more—they were converting low-quality forage more efficiently. So how do we apply this knowledge? Satellite-based insights from PastureKey can help graziers make better grazing decisions. 🌍 5 Practical Solutions Using PastureKey with Cibo Labs Pty Ltd: 🔹 Monitor seasonal forage trends with fractional cover to track real-time pasture quality. 🔹 Identify high-grazing pressure zones to prevent overgrazing and legume loss. 🔹 Predict feed gaps early—declining green fraction signals when supplementation is needed. 🔹 Balance stocking rates based on pasture recovery rather than biomass alone. 🔹 Enhance grazing distribution with data-driven placement of water and supplements. By integrating real-time pasture data, graziers can maximize productivity, reduce costs, and optimize pasture utilization. 📖 Reference: Charmley et al. Flying trip to Broome! This week I've been across to Broome to meet with the management team for one of the Kimberley based pastoral companies. I was there to show how Cibo Labs Pty Ltd can be used to support tactical decisions on station and to help the company meet and demonstrate its long term goals for sustainable rangelands, I learnt just as much around station logistics and rangelands management goals for the Kimberleys. I also had a chance to catch up with the Kimberley and Pilbara Cattlemen's Association's to share some ideas around what we are doing and how we can help producers in their network.

Digital Agrifood Summit Day 2 💡 Another fantastic day! We’re so lucky to have such a fantastic event right on our doorstep. From embracing AI, decarbonising agriculture, to verifying sustainability, all the big discussions in the one place, with the right people. 👉 We begun with CEO of Farmers for Climate Action, Natalie Collard, highlighting that climate change isn’t a problem for the future. “It’s impacting farmers now,” citing a $30,000 per year cost from adverse weather events. 👉 And finished on a high with an interactive session ‘Farm Office of the Future’. Professor David Lamb acted as the farmer of the future, demonstrating how AI across 5 areas can help improve farm management decisions into the future. 🐏 Forecasting; with AgriWebb, Dr Kenny Sabir, spoke about making decisions based upon pasture availability, stocking rates and paddock rotations. 🐄 Animal Management/Welfare; with Matt Shaffer, Data Gene, on clinical mastitis identification in dairy cows. Reducing antibiotic use for mastitis by 40-60%. 📈 Data Management; with Hamish Munro, Pairtree Intelligence, on real life solutions. Bringing together data across various platforms to make informed decisions on farm. 🚛 Traceability; with Lisa Barrios, Cibo Labs Pty Ltd on enabling, accessing and reporting data. Allowing producers to meet new markets and premiums. Thank you again Charles Sturt - AgriPark and Food Agility for hosting and coordinating such a brilliant event. We already look forward to next year! #DAS24 #DecarbonisingAgriculture #Sustainability #Innovation #AI

How Rainfall Variability Affects Cattle Growth – Managing Variability Within Farms and Paddocks Recent research (Animal, 2024) analyzed 1.3 million liveweight records from over 82,000 cattle, showing that rainfall impacts cattle growth differently across Australia’s agro-climatic zones: • Grassland & Subtropical Zones – Heavy rainfall can reduce growth short-term due to pasture damage and waterlogging, but recovery follows in later seasons. • Temperate Zones – More consistent rainfall supports steady, year-round growth. • Growth Variability – Differences in cattle growth are greater between farms than within them, highlighting the impact of local pasture conditions and management. In light of this research, the services provided by Cibo Labs Pty Ltd (AFM & PastureKey) offers producers objective, satellite-based insights to track pasture variability across farms and within paddocks. These insights help producers: ✔ Adjust stocking rates based on real-time pasture conditions. ✔ Plan forage budgeting and supplementation by accounting for rainfall-driven variability. ✔ Improve paddock-level decision-making to optimize productivity and reduce risk. With increasing climate variability, access to accurate, data-driven pasture insights is critical for managing feed availability and long-term herd performance. #CattleGrowth #PastureManagement #RainfallVariability #DataDrivenFarming #AgTech #CiboLabs
