It is home to a diverse community of about 83,600 people and has a dynamic local economy, employing almost 67,000 people with a gross regional product of $9.084 billion. Yarra City Council was formed in 1994 following the amalgamation of the cities of Richmond, Collingwood, Fitzroy and part of Carlton North, formerly part of the City of Melbourne, and parts of Alphington and Fairfield, previously part of the former City of Northcote. Yarra's 19.5 square kilometres include the suburbs of Abbotsford, Burnley, Clifton Hill, Collingwood, Cremorne, Fitzroy, North Carlton, North Fitzroy, Princes Hill and Richmond. Parts of Alphington and Fairfield - south of Heidelberg Road - are also included in Yarra. The Wurundjeri-willam people of the Kulin Nation are the Traditional Owners of the land that is now known as the City of Yarra and Council recognises them as the custodians of the cultural heritage of this land The administration of Council is spread across three historic town halls, including Richmond Town Hall in Bridge Road, Fitzroy Town Hall in Napier Street and Collingwood Town Hall in Hoddle Street. Council also provides customer service from the Connie Benn Centre at 160 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. The community is represented by nine councillors. The municipality is broken up into three geographic wards - Langridge Ward, Melba Ward and Nicholls Ward - each of which is represented by three Councillors. Our recycling staff are the unsung heroes of our waste management system, working hard behind the scenes to make sure waste is properly sorted, recycled, and repurposed. ♻️👏 Michal works on cleansing and sorting at our Clifton Hill Recycling Centre and is passionate about improving Yarra’s waste management to create better outcomes for our community. Having studied waste management in Prague and Vienna, he was shocked by Australia’s lack of waste separation upon arriving in the country over 10 years ago. However, he notes that there have been significant improvements over the years. “Yarra is doing a fantastic job and accepts a range of materials for recycling at the depot – from soft plastics and batteries, to bicycle tires and polystyrene – allowing us to divert significant amounts of waste from landfill.” Come and chat to our friendly staff at the Clifton Hill Recycling Centre: 📍 168 Roseneath Street, Clifton Hill Find out more about our recycling drop-off centres: https://lnkd.in/geTV6ycs

We’re proud of our beautiful parks, reserves and waterways. 🌳🤸♀️ With a growing population and increasing density, we’re committed to seeing these spaces flourish and thrive. After 4 years of advocacy, we’re thrilled to announce that the Victorian Government has announced an increase to the public open space contribution rate from 4.5% to 8.65%. These are payments made by property developers when land is subdivided. This means that we’ll have more funds to improve green spaces for our community in Yarra! Thanks to Department of Transport and Planning and Homes Victoria. Read more about this change our website: https://bit.ly/3WGaZkB

Are you aged 16 to 25 with an idea for a project or event for young people in Yarra? Our Youth-Led Grants program is now open for applications! 💰 One of our past recipients, Ronen Jafari, used the grant to break down barriers for young creatives in Yarra. Through a series of exhibitions and workshops run by local emerging artists, his ‘Partways: Navigating Art Spaces in Yarra’ project provided accessible pathways for young people to connect to the art world, gain experience exhibiting in a gallery space and try new mediums of creativity. Support from our Youth-Led Grants program allowed all participating artists to be remunerated for their time, skills and expertise. Ronen’s project created a safe space for young artists to facilitate and share knowledge, and also allowed Ronen to develop his leadership, people management and artistic practice.
