Happy Global Hydropower Day. One of the most mature forms of renewable generation available, hydropower provided 6.5 per cent of Australia’s electricity in 2023. Hydropower will play a crucial role in Australia’s energy future, providing not just generation but storage as well. With that in mind, it’s great to see the progress of Genex Power's Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project, a 250 MW project scheduled to be commissioned in early 2025. When connected to the grid, it will be the first pumped hydro project built in Australia for over 40 years. Check out the video for more information. As Australia transitions to clean energy, we need to ensure that the renewables industry is sustainable. That means making the most of the components we create, reusing them as much as possible, and recycling as much as we can when projects reach their end-of-life phase. Solar panels, for example, are generally designed to have a 30-year lifespan, but the average operational time is 15 years, often because newer systems are released and older panels are replaced too quickly. Many of the panels that are replaced go to waste. It’s an area that needs improvement and we should be striving to ensure our economies are as circular as possible. We spoke to Ali Zeerak, Founder and Managing Director of SUPPLY SOLAR PTY LTD, about his company’s approach to recycling Australian solar panels. https://lnkd.in/gH7MKvt7 #cleanenergy #renewableenergy #recycling #solar

The number of home batteries being installed in Australia in 2024 is hugely encouraging. That was one of the headlines in our Rooftop Solar and Storage Report for January-June 2024. Home batteries are the missing piece of the puzzle to help us maximise solar savings and lower household energy bills. We have been advocating for the Federal Government to put incentives in place to boost the uptake of batteries across the country. In our campaign 'It’s time to back batteries', launched in February, we reported that batteries could deliver savings in the region of $900+ per annum on energy bills, in addition to providing net savings to the energy system of around $190 million. Renewable energy sources firmed by storage are the future of Australia’s energy system, and it’s pleasing to see the country continuing to move in that direction. Today is World Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day – a fitting time to reflect on why green hydrogen (made from splitting H2O with renewable electricity) matters to Australia and the world. Hydrogen is not a solution for everything. Direct electrification, energy storage and energy efficiency can substitute oil and gas in a wide range of applications today – from home heating and cooking to business and industrial energy needs – and do so far more efficiently and cost-effectively than hydrogen can. But there are some applications for which green hydrogen is an essential decarbonisation solution or could be a crucial enabler in emerging clean industries. Currently, more than 50 million tonnes of hydrogen per year – almost all of it fossil fuel based – is consumed globally. The task of substituting this ‘grey’ hydrogen with a clean alternative is a mammoth one, but it is essential to the decarbonisation effort. There are a range of sectors – such as aviation and shipping – that will find it challenging to decarbonise without scalable renewable fuels. By having domestic green hydrogen production capability, we will support existing industries and unlock opportunities for the expansion of Australia’s manufacturing base. This would attract valuable new export industries and create thousands of jobs. Scaling-up any industry is a challenging task, especially with business and industry facing higher costs and inadequate policy settings, for example the lack of carbon pricing, mandates or incentives to stimulate uptake. But the economic prize for Australia if we can make green hydrogen work is worth the effort. Rooftop solar installations are on track to pass a total of 25 GW installed capacity by the end of 2024, and New South Wales has become the second state to pass one million total rooftop solar installations.   That’s according to the January to June edition of our bi-annual Rooftop Solar and Storage Report, released last week, which also confirms that 1.3 GW of rooftop solar capacity was installed in the first half of the year. Australia is a world leader in rooftop solar – the graph below demonstrates how rapidly Australians are embracing the technology. Stay tuned to our channels for an update on trends in home battery installations across the country.
