This week’s On Good Authority covers the biennial State of Climate Report developed by the Bureau of Meteorology and the CSIRO. The report finds Australia’s climate (temperature over land) has warmed by an average of 1.51°C ± 0.23°C since 1910, and sea surface temperatures have increased by an average of 1.08°C since 1900. Drawing on the latest national and international climate research, the report includes projections of future changes in Australia’s climate and notes the global carbon budget for a 50% chance to limit warming of the earth to 1.5°C will be depleted in 7 years from now, unless the rate of human-induced emissions is reduced. This week’s On Good Authority features the recently released World Energy Outlook report by the International Energy Agency (IEA). This year’s report is underpinned by 3 interconnected themes: energy security, prospects for clean energy transitions and uncertainty. The IEA observed that the immediate effects of the global energy crisis have begun to recede throughout 2023 and that clean energy transitions around the world have significantly accelerated in recent years due to government policies. However, more effort is needed to meet climate targets as today’s suite of policies still results in a world heading towards a 2.4°C global average temperature increase by 2100.
