About us
CODES is the Centre for Ore Deposit and Earth Sciences. Formed in 1989 at the University of Tasmania, the Centre has grown substantially over the years and is now widely regarded as a global leader in ore deposit research. It is home to over 50 highly qualified research staff and over 100 postgraduate students, further cementing its position as the largest university-based team of ore deposit researchers in the world. CODES has developed a strong and long-standing reputation for delivering high quality research outcomes of direct relevance to the mining industry. This has been achieved over a period in excess of 30 years, which includes terms as a Federal Government-funded ARC Key Centre (1989-1996), ARC Special Research Centre (1997 to 2005) and ARC Centre of Excellence (2005 to 2013). CODES is located within the University of Tasmania's School of Natural Sciences, which is part of the College of Sciences and Engineering (CoSE). Highly productive worldwide collaborations have been developed with over 60 industry companies, plus a host of joint research initiatives with more than 110 institutions and universities. It currently has major research projects spanning 30 countries, and is one of the leading academic groups to publish in Economic Geology.

Was my honour yesterday to chair the first session of the CODES - Centre for Ore Deposit and Earth Sciences Critical and Strategic Metals Symposium at University of Tasmania. Thank you to all presenters for your excellent talks and to David Cooke for introducing the themes of the symposium. Simon Jowitt presented on what makes different commodities critical (and strategic) in different places and some of the current and potential future challenges and opportunities - both research and societal - in this area. Denis Fougerouse presented amazing images of atom probe tomography showing nanoscale variability of metals in sulfides, highlighting challenges in understanding critical metal deportment. Rachael M. highlighted Geoscience Australia's many initiatives on critical and strategic metals plus precompetitive national datasets. Vinicius Godoi P. da Cruz presented part of his PhD study on Rosebery, focusing on potential of critical metals like indium after I presented some highlights on the Environmentally Sustainable Production of Critical Metals- Regional Research Collaboration, which Vinicius' project is part of. Plenty more sessions to come with granite-derived tin-tungsten on now!

Next week the hyperspectral team from CSIRO Discovery, will be presenting a case study based on targeting Li-pegmatites from satellite-based sensors, at the CODES - Centre for Ore Deposit and Earth Sciences, Critical and Strategic Metals Symposium 2024, University of Tasmania. There are several exploration challenges associated with these small complex mineral systems, one being how well can we characterise SWIR active minerals, such as phyllosilicates (i.e. mica), across the field of ~1000 pegmatites. It should be a good discussion. Carsten Laukamp, Heta Lampinen, Monica LeGras, Mario Iglesias Martínez, Jo M.

FINAL CALL! It is no more than 10 days to kick off the Critical and Strategic Metals Symposium ran by CODES - Centre for Ore Deposit and Earth Sciences in Hobart on 10th-12th July 2024. We have an exceptional lineup of speakers covering different topics, from the Global and Australian context to specific deposit models and exploration strategies, including Lithium, Tin, Tungsten, Rare Earth Elements, Cobalt, Copper, Nickel and Platinum Group Elements deposits. It will be a great opportunity to bring together academia, governmental agency and industrial professionals focusing on the latest research, policies, exploration and production pathways of critical and strategic metals/minerals in Australia and beyond! Registrations will remain open for the Critical and Strategic Metals Symposium, until to 5pm 28th June (Australia Eastern Time). If you do not want to miss this opportunity, please visit: https://lnkd.in/eVe5PKwZ or just scan the QR code in the image. If you are currently researching any of these topics, please do not hesitate to contact CODES.Info@utas.edu.au to request a discounted rate. We also have a few spots for the post-symposium field trip to the iconic Western Tasmania, where you will have the rare and great opportunity to visit Kara Fe-W, Roseberry Cu-Zn-Pb, Mt Lyell Au-Cu, and Avebury Ni deposits (core shed). The second image is a big chunk of euhedral scheelite (bluish-yellow) crystals cemented by magnetite taken from Kara. You will have an excellent opportunity to visit the Kara open pit and add jewellery-level pieces of minerals such like scheelite, magnetite, garnet, epidote, and vesuvianite to your collections! See you in Tassie in person or online! A big thank you to Noel White, Terry Hoschke, Campbell McCuaig, Ned Howard, Penny Sinclair, Adi Maryono, Jeneta Owens, and Tim Ireland for kicking off CODES - Centre for Ore Deposit and Earth Sciences' flagship Ore Deposit Models and Exploration Strategies Short Course shortcourse this week. The speakers provided us all with great insights into exploration strategies for a diverse array of commodity styles, and practical advice with regards applying mineral system concepts, ore deposit models and geophysical methods to mineral exploration. The speakers have set the bar very high for the rest of the course, but with another 36 speakers to come over the two-week program, I am very confident all of our on-line and in-person course participants will continue to be inspired, entertained and educated on all aspects of precious, base, critical and strategic metal mineralisation.
