What did I learn this week at the 6th Annual Social Media for Government Conference? 👉 That I love my job and what we do. That we are somewhat super heros. 👉 That Social Media Management is an underrated underapprecated and under resourced role. 👉 I learned how to use a revolving door (was very small town gal in the big city) 👉 That with the trust of our leaders, we have the potential to completely change the dynamics of our communications and increase trust and respect within our community. This conference was a huge eye opener for me. I came home extremely proud of where I work and the leadership team that I have. The strategies that were put in place before I started seem to be what sets us apart, and that is a reflection of my fearless leader Lisa Campbell. I thought that the processes we had in place were just the norm, I've since discovered that they are not! - Video is king - even LinkedIn is adopting reels. Gather as much short form video content as you can, all day every day. - AI is both good and bad / let's create some policies and guidelines around this - Community groups are not scary. Utilise these spaces, build relationships here. Meet the people where they are. - Successful two-way communications cannot happen if you turn off commenting. Don't be scared of the comments. Be human in the comments. WE LOVE THE COMMENTS, embrace the comments. - You do not ask the call centre to stop answering phones, you don't have everyone replace their email with "noreply" so why are some Councils turning off comments? - Live video is an amazing tool that every Council should be using. Build trust in this space, it is an opportunity to be authentic, be human, be vulnerable and build relationships. - If you do not want your community to treat you like robots, then don't act like robots. Don't be afraid to humanise your comms. - Own your mistakes. Don't create comms around covering it up, create comms that say "we made a mistake". This is where the trust comes from. We are all just humans doing human things for other humans. We should speak like humans, show up like humans, act like humans, feel like humans and allow ourselves to be treated like humans.
