CSIRO's $1.2 million scholarship at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) is empowering young roboticists from underrepresented groups to bring groundbreaking ideas to life 🦾 Brittany G., Angelina Fantasia, and Jessica Gumowski have started their postgrad studies at QUT Centre for Robotics and CSIRO Robotics supported by the Alberto Elfes Memorial Scholarship Fund. Named after the late Professor Alberto Elfes, a pioneering CSIRO robotics leader, the scholarship aims to increase diversity within Australia’s robotics sector. Brittany, Angelina and Jessica will develop autonomous technology to monitor Antarctica’s delicate ecosystem, navigate treacherous bushfire zones, and traverse both land and water. CSIRO deepfake expert Dr Shahroz Tariq, PhD recently spoke to Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) about alarming vulnerabilities in deepfake detection technology: https://ab.co/4ivx2nX 🧑💻 CSIRO and Sungkyunkwan University’s latest study put leading deepfake detection tools to the test, revealing that they struggle to reliably detect real-world deepfakes. But there’s hope, with Shahroz recommending specialised detectors could outpace the cat-and-mouse game between deepfake creators and detection tools. Discover his insights and recommendations in the full article here: https://ab.co/4ivx2nX #AI #Deepfake #Cybersecurity Minh Binh Le, @Jiwon (김지원) Kim , Simon S. Great interview in Spatial Source with Terria co-founders Ana Belgun and Amber Standley, have a read here: https://bit.ly/4izKTsY 💡 The latest CSIRO's Data61 spinout, Terria's innovative platform organises and visualises spatial data from thousands of sources to create digital twins that can model ‘what-if’ scenarios. Backed by Main Sequence funding, Terria is set to scale globally while remaining true to its open-source roots. "One of our main goals is not only to make the development of spatial digital twins much easier than it is today, but also to develop a geospatial software library which is open source," Founder Ana Belgun explains in Spatial Source. "The purpose of that is to basically scale the impact that we have by developing software and products and allowing other teams around the world to use our technology and build their own platform applications." The geospatial data market is predicted to grow by $50 billion in the next three years. Happy International Pi Day! 🔢 Maths isn’t just about numbers, it’s about solving real-world problems. Sarah Lee, one of our talented Next Generation Graduates Program students, is using Bayesian statistics to transform how we understand and address educational disadvantage in Australia. Her work focuses on prior elicitation, a step in Bayesian modelling that helps find causal pathways in education. This work is part of the Thrive project: https://lnkd.in/g_djtNPT 🌸 Sarah’s passion for this research comes from her belief that education opens doors and her love for problem-solving, especially in maths. Through the Next Generation Graduates Scholarship Program, she’s connected with other students, gained industry experience, and seen how her research can make an impact in real life. Her advice to someone thinking of applying? Go for it! The program brings together students from a wide range of backgrounds and disciplines, making it a great opportunity to collaborate, learn, and contribute to meaningful research. Can you tell which of these photos are AI-generated? 🤔 Many deepfake detectors can’t according to a new study by CSIRO and Sungkyunkwan University: https://bit.ly/41OkhgQ The team tested 16 leading deepfake detectors and found that none could reliably detect real-world deepfakes. Many detection tools are trained on limited datasets, making them ineffective against deepfakes they haven’t seen before. To tackle this, researchers developed a five-step framework to systematically evaluate detection tools and are working on new models that integrate audio, text, images, and metadata for more reliable detection. With deepfakes becoming cheaper, more convincing, and harder to detect, advancing detection methods is critical in the fight against misinformation, fraud, and security threats. Read more here: https://bit.ly/41OkhgQ Well done to the team Minh Binh Le, Jiwon Kim, Simon S. Woo, Sharif Abuadbba, PhD, Kristen Moore, and Shahroz Tariq, PhD 👏

New research from CSIRO’s Data61 and the University of Melbourne is improving how quantum computers detect and correct errors in quantum operations ✅ Their implementation involves multicycle error correction which is demonstrated on IBM quantum processors. It applies error correction multiple times during a quantum operation, helping to catch and fix more mistakes before they cause bigger problems. This approach improves the accuracy of the CNOT gate, a critical quantum operation that flips the second qubit depending on the state of the first qubit. This research is an important step towards more resilient and scalable quantum computing. Curious to learn more? Read the full paper below 👇 Well done to authors @Younghun Kim, Martin Sevior, and Muhammad Usman 👏 #quantum #quantumcomputing
