Artificial intelligence will deliver radical changes in the speed, cost and availability of new personalised treatments for cancer and other diseases—including the ability to test medicines on 'digital twins' before providing them to patients. Scientists at La Trobe University's new Australian Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Innovation (ACAMI)—launched today—will apply the power of AI to mRNA therapy to enable faster design of more precise and effective treatments. 'When it comes to designing pharmaceuticals and other therapeutics, AI can do things faster and with more precision than we ever thought possible,' said La Trobe Vice-Chancellor Prof. Theo Farrell at today's centre launch. 'It’s really exciting to think of what ACAMI will do and how it is going to deliver a very significant uplift in health benefits.' The State Government has committed $10 million over five years to the centre, while La Trobe will contribute $9.3 million. The launch of ACAMI complements the forthcoming mRNA facility to be established at La Trobe's Melbourne (Bundoora) campus by world-leading biotechnology company BioNTech SE. Combined with an mRNA Victoria partnership, ACAMI will play a key role in developing an AI-enabled medical ecosystem in Victoria, ensuring the state's world-leading medical innovation keeps pace with global standards. 'ACAMI will be another pillar of the growing biotech industry here at La Trobe University,' said Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas. Special thanks to ACAMI Director Wei Xiang, Dr Erinna Lee, Prof. Nilmini Wickramasinghe and mRNA Victoria CEO Phoebe Dunn.
