A great summary of ADHD and the struggles with emotions
One main trait of ADHD that is often underestimated and yet was a fundamental part of the diagnostic criteria before the DSMIII came out is Emotional Dysregulation. With an understimulation of dopaminergic networks in the Prefrotal Cortex, there tends to be less inhibitory control over limbic areas that among other things are what make us feel emotions. This leads people with ADHD to struggle regulating their emotions and self-soothing. Emotional Dysregulation in ADHD patients is the first predictor of accidents caused by road rage, as well as the first mentioned issue in long-term relationships. This can cause significant distress also at work. This being said, having intense emotions also means that people with ADHD live life more intensely and with more colors. It makes them very empathetic and are often people driven by a great passion. This can also be a great asset in the workplace and in life in general. Accommodations, understanding and the implementation of life strategies are all key to finding emotional balance. It enables us to deal with the negatives and prevent harmful consequences, and fully enjoy the positives. ______ I am Ludovico, your ADHD Coach and Neurodiversity Expert.
